how can you check battery level while charging?

While the keyboard, mouse, and trackpad are connected via bluetooth you can check the battery levels by clicking on the bluetooth icon on the upper-right (on the menu bar). How can you do this while they are charging? (bluetooth connection is lost when connected to the lighting cable)
