Q: Can't enable iCloud backup

I recently had an issue backing up my iPhone 6s to iCloud due to storage issues. So I cleaned up a bunch of things and even deleted the backup. Now when I go to my storage settings I'm told that I have 4.4gb available and my next backup size will be 3.2gb. But on the app list it says Photo Library is 5.5gb.(Pic attached) I don't even do an iCloud photo library and my camera roll is only 2.5gb. When I try and turn off a backup, it won't let me. I've done network resets, turned off and on iCloud backups. But I still cannot backup to iCloud. (I have backed up to my computer as a safety net)

Please help.

uh oh,  i also noticed i have photos in my icloud photo library not showing on my iPhone. Just shows blank image with a pic of the cloud in the corner. Luckily photos are still visible in my macbook. Ran full backup onto local storage, oddly icloud showed the photo library as 120GB but local copy is around 140GB, wonder why such a difference. Tried rebuilding my phone again last night, missing photos still not showing.

Apple support made me reset my icloud password to one generated by them earlier this week so their engineers could use it, however I still haven't heard back from apple engineers, and now I'm hesitant to leave the password as is.

Has anyone actually heard back from apple engineers?

This could be normal, some differences may be related to how large the files are, how large is the disk (and what is the minumim size of a "block"), how a GB is calculated (if 1024 MB or 1000 MB, which is apparently a new standard) and so on. So I wouldn't worry about this.

A different matter is if you can't download the photos: the little cloud means that the image is still on the server and has not been downladed yet, but if you tap on it it should be download straight away. You should probably see the little spinning wheel in the top left corner of the iPhone (just after the wifi/carrier symbol), meaning that it is downloading stuff. If you see it, maybe it just needs time to complete the download and you'll see bunches of photos appearing from time to time.

I'd like to say that my iCloud library is working fine but it is very slow and sometimes out of sync. Unfortunately it has always been like this, so - at least in my case - this issue is not related to backup (I mean: I didn't notice any change in that).

Add me to the list of users encountering "there was a problem enabling iCloud backup".

It started with a backup failing to complete (iOS 9.2), following which I went through the full troubleshooting steps, trimming the set of apps to backup, deleting the old backup, disabling/enabling iCloud backup, backing up to iTunes and doing a full restore.

Called Apple support, after some back-and-forth was told there is a problem that will be fixed in the next software update (call ended before I could get details).  Subsequently upgraded to iOS 9.2.1, but still encountering the problem.  Attempts to enable iCloud backups all give the "iCloud Backup Failed: There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup" and retries are futile.

I'm in the same boat.  I can't backup my 6 Plus to iCloud, I can't delete the empty backup that appears in "Manage Storage" and when I turn off iCloud, I can't re-enable it.  I've been working on resolving this issue for three days and have tried every suggestion that's been published, minor and drastic.  Nothing works.  I was about to call Apple Support, but it sounds like they'd either run me through all the same things I've already tried or they'd just tell me they are aware of the issue and I'll have to wait for the next update.  I don't have time to sit on the phone with Support for 4 hours, so I'll just back up to iTunes for awhile until they hopefully resolve this issue.

Apple, please make this a priority.  I can't imagine how much data is at risk here between all of us who are having the issue.

I Am having the same problem.   Yesterday I deleted my old backup, and want to backup a new backup to my iPad. When I tried it, it said cant enable backup.  I was stupid to try this, so I deleted my iPhone data all, and it does the exact same thing can't enable iCloud Backup. I called Apple Store but the guy on the phone never heard about the issue before.  My own computer tech guy is coming out Monday to see if he can do anything.  i look on apple status, but they show nothing wrong with iCloud back.  It seems like we all are having problems.  This is getting frustrating.  This is why I hate software updates.

I Think I may have spotted a pattern here. Is there anyone impacted who has not purchased more storage than standard 5gb or who is not using icloud photo library?

I'm impacted without having purchased additional icloud storage. Just deleted my old bachup (450Mo) to make a fresh one and since that... You know the story...

IT seems like the problem is when you delete old backup, and want to start a fresh new back up.  That is the entire problem.

I think definitely, anyone who has deleted an old backup cannot re-enable the backups.

However, there was an earlier bug that used to cause backups to fail to complete, and one of the suggestions to fix that was to delete the old backup.

I have not purchased extra space, and still encountered problems.  I am not using iCloud Photo library (but I do use photostream)

It´s exactly m'y case. I first was affected by the "failed to compled backup" and then by the impossibility to enable icloud backup after having deleted the old one (deleting old backup was supposed to resolve the failed to complete bug... Not kidding...

Definitely. I do not use icloud photo library for the sheer reason of leaving that space for backups only. I deleted my backups because I was getting the "buy more space" notice and then I encountered this problem and started this thread. It really is a bigger deal when you think about it. icloud is one of the selling features of the entire Apple ecosystem and for this to be happening is a huge negative on that ecosystem.

I hope they read these threads and do something soon.

HHow many of you called apple up, and a tech said they never heard of anyone else having a problem? Happen to me.  I go to apple status, and it shows no one is having problems. That is pure BS.  Apple doesn't want to face Thant they have a glitch in their IOS
