I have a mid 2010 mini with Snow Leopard on it. For testing I was able to install Mountain Lion an an external USB flash drive that was blank - no 10.6 on it at all. Every OS starting with Lion says 10.6 is a requirement. What is missing from the USB drive with a fresh install of Mountain Lion?

Because both the Mac App Store and the downloaded installers require at least 10.6.6 to run. Once they’ve been launched, they can be installed onto a blank volume without anything being missed.

If I have a brand new empty hard drive and Snow Leopard is nowhere to be found on the computer will the installer work if I have made a USB installer?
If you used a product such as DiskMaker to create it, yes.
If you drag-copied the installer to the thumbdrive, no.

Does Mountain Lion not include iDVD, iMovie and similar (iLife?) apps? My clean installation on a USB drive is missing some of the apps I had in Snow Leopard.
No, it doesn't.

You can copy them from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and then check the App Store for updates.
