external monitor not showing full resolution

MBP 15 late 2011 running 10.10.5. Have seen threads similar to this earlier but with older/other systems. Have a brand new BenQ 27 inch that supports 2560 pixels, using HDMI input....cannot get the computer to give me that res. Have gone through every single monitor menu item. Did PRAM reset twice, tried all the plugging and unplugging tricks, did the Opt button with Scaling...no luck. Highest I can get is 1080P.

Anyone know of anything that will makes this work??

MacBook Pro (15-inch Glossy), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 8 gb ram, 500gig, FCP X, CS5

Update of concern to all. Yes, I found similar threads saying that this issue started with Mavericks. So I just verified that indeed it's an OS X problem. APPLE are you reading this?? I expect you to contact me.

I took the backup drive to my son's MBP which happens to be on 10.6.8. and I booted my MBP from that. And yeah, it totally shows FULL res available from the 27 inch BenQ see attached screen grabs. Repeat original issue is under 10.10 all I can get is HD no matter what trick I try. APPLE FIX IT NOW!

Because the software I use won't run in older OS X and the computer hardware clearly is not at fault. You broke the software. I need a patch ASAP.
