Jan 16, 2016 9:26 PM in response to Hanah123by ChrisJ4203,This is because your iMessage has not completed activating. If you look in Settings>Messages and under iMessage it should say something to the effect of waiting for activation.
This can happen when using a non-supported carrier. iMessage activation requires that an international SMS be sent by the phone and received to the UK server, and that is what will activate your number. Non-supported carriers normally will not allow the SMS, so you cannot activate. If you are using a supported carrier, then see this support document, after waiting 24 hours for the number to activate. If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
