Q: having trouble updating my iphone through itunes

I am trying to update my iPhone 6 through iTunes. haven't updated it since I got it a year ago. my memory was really full and it keeps saying there is an error and now my phone is at a standstill and im afraid to turn it on/unplug it. I backed it up but I get afraid to push restore for fear that I will lose everything. what do I do?

iPhone 6, iOS 7.1.2

I had just updated it to the newest one and I just now restarted my computer, so I'm going to see if that works. If not, how do I uninstall and reinstall without losing my songs that I have on iTunes? Also, there is a pop up that says that if updating my phone doesn't work I should push restore to factory settings and it will prompt me to restore my phone to my old settings once it goes through. Im always afraid to restore to factory settings because I don't want to lose everything in my phone. What do you think about it?

"Media that you buy from the iTunes Store or songs that you import from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default. They won't be deleted when you remove iTunes. Although it's highly unlikely that you'll lose any of your iTunes Library when following the steps below, it's always good practice to make regular backups of your iTunes library."

If you make a backup of your phone - you can restore your phone from that backup after you restore to factory default.
