I am trying to connect a Macbook Pro with Retina Display to a new Dell Ultrasharp 3014 monitor. I have tried to connect via HDMI and the DVI cable provided with the monitor but monitor says "no dvi-d cable".

How do I connect a Macbook Pro with Retina Display (just purchased) to a New Dell Ultrasharp U3014? I have tried connecting with HDMI and the DVI cable provided with the monitor but monitor says "no dvi-d" cable. I have never tried to do this before so I'm lost.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), Dell Ultrasharp U3014

As I previously stated, use a mini-displayport cable. HDMI is primarily a method for connecting to TVs, presentation projectors and inexpensive monitors. In many cases HDMI connections will be limited to HD resolutions because that was its intended use. The "HD" in HDMI is in reference to 1920x1080 resolution.

Your display has mini-displayport connectivity, use it.

If you insist on using the HDMI port, you would need a HDMI to DVI dual-link adapter to get the full resolution of your monitor, and those cables would include active circuitry and would cost more than using the appropriate mini-displayport cables.
