Q: What is in Apps

i developed a lot of duplicates I have been eliminating in iMac with El Capitan. In Disk Utility I see that several hundred GB of data are in "Apps." When I show the specific apps elsewhere with their size there is nowhere near that amount of space. What all is included in "Apps" I see in disk utility and how do I study it to see if there are duplicates.

A senior Apple advisor and I spent a lot of time looking for this info and couldn't find it. Even a reference would be appreciated!!!!

Did they have you reindex Spotlight...?

If not, reindex Spotlight as per > Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support

Then after Spotlight has finished indexing, recheck your Disk Usage bars in both Apple > About This Mac > Storage and Disk Utility.

Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of those files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper.

Thanks for responding. I did as it described but had to do it through Finder since I can't find the Mac Hard Drive symbol on my desktop anymore (why is it gone?) I can't tell anything is happening. How can I tell it's doping what it supposed to do?
