how can I create a column with incremental dates in number 3.6.1

I'm a noob to macs so be gentle with me. I have a spreadsheet and need to have incremental dates in the first column from 01.01.16 to end of year. I've managed to create a custom date format and changed the cells to be that format but no date appears in the cells. What have I missed? Thanks

Here's one way to do that:

First make sure your table has enough rows for all the dates you want.

Then enter your first date is in, say, A2. In A3 (the cell below it) enter this formula: =A2+1

Then select the cell with the formula, hover the cursor over its bottom edge and drag the yellow dot down the column.

You can also select the cell with the formula, command-c to copy, select all the cells below it in the column, and command-v to paste.

You can, of course, still use the custom date format you like.

Yes, as quinn describes, Numbers is smart enough to fill in sequential dates without a formula. In that case you must drag the yellow dot to fill. The command-c to copy followed by the command-v to paste won't work in that case. The nice thing about using a formula is that it makes it easy to fill with weekly dates if you want that, via =A2+7.
