Q: Is there an El Capitan low battery warning?

Hi -- I recently installed El Capitan (10.11.2) on my 13-inch, 2009 MacBook.  How do I get the system to alert me when the battery level is low?  Right now, I get no alert when the battery runs out: the Mac simply shuts down without warning, at which time I have to connect the power cord and boot the system.

Thank you.

    There is no such alert.

Not true. I have gotten them with my 2015 Retina MacBook and have gotten them with my prior 17" MacBook Pro 3.1, and my MacBook Air.

I didn't see anywhere in System Preferences where you can have an alert go off if your battery level reaches X percent.  I checked before I responded.

That's because it's not an option in System Preferences. It's a built in function, it's not something that can be switched on and off.

I'm currently at 16% battery (1 hour and 29 minutes more for me). When I get the next notification, I'll screenshot it for you, since you're a non-believer.

Here's what it looks like, it happens at 5%:

The battery indicator also turns red.

The prediction is that I have 28 minutes left:

There are additional warnings beyond that, but I generally react to the 1st one. I think the final one is something like, "Shutdown in 10 minutes, save anything that you're working on." I don't remember the exact message.
