Missing media in Final Cut Pro

Hi all! I've just complete a project on Final Cut Pro X 10.2.2, and two large video files on my phone seem to have problems importing.

I've imported files to Final Cut on this computer from various devices/cards/port in the past, including from this iPhone 6, with no problem. Usually, the background task window will show when those imports are in progress and this was the case at first with these two files as well, though it was taking longer than usual; so I kept editing my project for several hours giving it time to process. By the time I finished, it appeared as if the files were imported. Then, when I tried to export the video, I received an error message saying I wouldn't be able to export so long as my project referenced files that were still on a camera--but didn't say which files it was referring to. So I closed Final Cut and restarted it, and realized the missing media files were the two videos on the iPhone. But when I tried re-importing them, I couldn't because it said the camera wasn't attached (it was). I tried just importing it again, but the software doesn't react when I do so, and background tasks do not show any import taking place.

My next troubleshooting step is to delete the files from the library completely and re-import them, but would prefer not to because I think this will cause me to lose edits I've been working on for the last several hours. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Thanks so much!

I've now also tried:

--Importing other video files from the same iPhone, and the other files worked, so the connection to the iPhone and the iPhone itself are fine.

--Transferring the video files separately to my computer, then importing them to Final Cut: it worked, but the software did not detect that the files were the same as the ones I already cut, so it didn't help

--Moving the files from my project library to trash, and re-importing them: background tasks showed a 0% render attempt, then the render attempt disappeared and the software did not respond again

--Tried to create an archive of the video files on my iPhone, but the "create archive" button in the import window is inactive.

--When I right click the clips from the library, "show in Finder" is inactive; a search of my hard drive shows they are indeed not in the original media folder in FCPX

Note: When I restart FCPX, the files appear in the project as red missing media warnings; as soon as I open the import window, the clips reappear and I can playback the entire project great; the parts that play over the clips in question are not blurry as if they were still being rendered.

I feel desperate at this point; it's been so many hours that at one point I thought of giving up and just starting over, but I'm so deep into the edit that it'll probably take 10x longer than the first time around. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Hi Luis!

Thanks for your response; I just looked up how to relink files and went through the steps; when I got to the part where I have to select File > Relink and the relink window appears, there are no missing clips listed. When I select "all," a list of all the clips in the library appear, and the two clips I'm having trouble with are not listed. Could I be doing something wrong perhaps? This is my first time trying this relink process.

Thank you!!

Hi Luis,

I'd tried it both ways; by selecting the whole library, and the event in which the clips were imported and appear in the browser. They're still in the browser, but didn't show up in the list of files in the relink window.

I finally just sucked it up after getting some rest and redoing it all; it didn't take as much time as I feared, but was still a painful process. I didn't think to grab screen shots first; but basically, upon startup FCPX would have red missing file placeholders where the problematic clips were in the timeline, and in the browser; as soon as I opened the import window, it would detect my iPhone connection and fill those missing file placeholders in with the clips themselves. The background task windows would show everything as "idle," as in no importing or rendering being performed in the background. So everything would be fine--until I tried to export, and it would say that I can't export because my project references files that are still on the camera. etc. etc.

It would still be great to find a solution, but I guess the lesson here is to avoid editing any clips that I'm not 100% sure has already been imported into FCPX!

Thanks so much for your help and responding; I learned something re: re-linking files. Take care!
