Q: Websites very unpredictable.  What should be in the default website directory i.e. /wiki?

Hi,

Have recently read in multiple places not to remove the default website else things can go wonky, unfortunately quite some time ago I messed with it (before knowing not to, while I was trying to free up my domain name for a custom site), since reading the warnings, am now trying to get things back to normal.  I moved the port 80 version of the default website to point back to default folder, seems to work, but as I look in default I don't see a /wiki or /auth nor /xcode  is that how the folder is supposed to be?  I ask as none of the services on the web site work any more, I get "The requested URL /auth was not found on server"  same for /change password and /wiki (even once enabled) I know they used to work some time back - any way to force server to recreate the files/folders, or to do it by hand?  I don't see them in the trash and suspect if I removed them it was a long time ago.

I have the default websites as server.example.com on ports 80 and 443.  Server won't allow me to set the ip address to my secondary network (the less reliable WIFI) on either of the default sites , wanted this so I can keep my custom website on the more reliable wired ip.  So I have the 2 default sites on all IPs and custom on the servers main IP (wired) it gives a warning about services may not be accessible, but I am confused by that as the default web sites are stuck on all interfaces so will always be an issue regardless of what I choose for the custom websites IP (please let me know what I am missing ).

Should I worry about this?  I never use the default site and frankly would prefer to disable those two while leaving my custom website, but since folks say don't remove it I won't

I AM SUSPECTING I SHOULD WORRY ABOUT THIS or my DNS /website settings -  I am seeing very odd website responses that are not always repeatable:  for example I have a second website and its doing all sorts of weird things like appending /wiki and saying admin has not turned it off when its on (other times it goes to the default server wiki and all the options work.)  Note, my second custom web does not have any wiki, its a very basic test page.  This is from accessing it from the server's websites page or safari.  Also shows port 80, but has appends the https inferring 443, and likes to switch it back to port 443 when i edit the website entry   Have rewritten this note so many times as the symptoms are moving faster than I can type.

FYI1:  I call the custom website www.example.com (port 443).  I call the second custom website www.abc.example.com (port 80?) Am assuming there is no issue with them coexisting along with the 2 defaults (server.example.com on ports 80 and 443)?

FYI2:  From the server app, I can get to each of the 4 websites (at times, but often it gets to the wrong one).

FYI3:  The green dot by each website on server websites page are randomly moving around, so I don't trust them.  Concerns?

FYI4:  both server IPs are on the same network.  Not seeing any value to keeping WIFI net on if I can't move the default to it?

FYI5:  On the DNS front (setup as server doing only lookups for server and local clients with 2 outside forwarding servers) I have a primary zone of example.com with a:

  • server.example.com A-record with local wired IP and fixed external IP,
  • server.example.com NS-record, and
  • server.example.com MX-record (priority 10)
  • along with the local IP reverse DNS and
  • fixed external IP reverse DNS.  (not sure if both are needed, but my mail is working, so have not messed with it)

A second primary zone

  • abc.example.com A-record with local wifi IP
  • abc.example.com NS-record
