Mac OS XAs a test, try shutting down (powering off) your laptop and disconnecting all USB devices. Do this to Reset (restart) your iPod

Start up your laptop, run iTunes, and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on laptop, by itself. Is there any difference?

It charges my ipod it just won't connect with the laptop, when it always had done the past 2 years.

Mac OS XTry putting the iPod into Disk Mode
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
With iTunes running, connect to computer with one of the cables that works with other device. You should do this with iPod as the only USB device, like before. If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery."
It charges my ipod it just won't connect with the laptop
To clarify, are you saying the iPod's screen just shows the battery charging symbol (when you connect it to computer)? Or does the iPod's screen acknowledge being connected to computer, by saying "Connected" or "Do not disconnected" or something else?

Jan 19, 2016 12:24 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby hannahjaynemiller07,It charges the ipod sometimes but not everytime, sometimes it says something like 'accessories not accessible'. I tried another usb lead today and it still kept saying 'usb not connected'. I think there is something wrong with the ipod as I have now tried 3 different ipods and they connect to my laptop fine.

Mac OS XDid you try putting the iPod into Disk Mode, as described in previous reply, running iTunes, and connecting iPod by itself to computer?
I also asked in previous reply what the iPod's screen shows when you connect it? It says 'usb not connected' on the iPod's screen? Or is that a message that comes up on the computer's screen? Does the iPod's screen acknowledge (in some way) that it is connected? Or does it only show the battery charging symbol? Or does the iPod's screen not react at all when you connect it?
There is obviously something wrong with the iPod. You want to know (1) what is wrong, and (2) can you fix it?
