Itunes crashes in El Capitan -everytime

Ever since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to El Capitan itunes has crashed. Ironically because itunes in Snow Leopard would no longer sync my iphone when ios 9 came out, I had to upgrade to El Capitan, and now the new itunes crashes. I have backed up, erased my disc, and reinstalled El Capitan 3 times and no joy, itunes still crashes. I have followed Linc Davis in the communities and followed some of his instructions for similar problems like taking the itunes folder out of my user and putting it on the desktop, then loading a couple of songs back in. I have itunes match so all but my last several songs are in there, but it crashed before I could add anything back. Everytime it crashes it says it because of the "Sharing artwork manager worker thread" so I turned off getting artwork automatically. Still crashes. Most of the time it crashes now in the first 30 seconds I open it, which really means it is open for less than 10 seconds.

Here is the crash report beginning. I can send more if necessary.

These instructions will have to be modified if you've moved the iTunes folder from its usual location.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Cache

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with a subfolder named "Cache" selected. Quit iTunes if it's running. Move the selected folder to the Trash. Relaunch the application and re-download all album artwork.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

I did move itunes but only to follow your instructions to another user that was having itunes crashing issues. Then when it crashed again, I just put it back to the same place as before. I put your name in the original question because I had read your previous posts helping other users with similar problems. Mine include the beach balls and slow acting as evidenced in the general statement at the beginning of the etrecheck stating I have performance "below average".

I did throw away the cache folder you indicated. I also emptied the trash. I did not restart the imac. It did open the first time for about 2 minutes and crashed after I checked the download album artwork box. The second time, it crashed in about 5 seconds. The crash report it wants to send to apple still blames the Sharing Artwork Manager Worker Thread as below...

Crashed Thread: 33 Sharing Artwork Manager Worker Thread

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000

Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

So I did your fix again and restarted it before opening itunes. I'll tell you what happens then.

Should I be going into itunes and throwing away the entire artwork folder, or just the cache? If that is what you meant originally, I'm sorry I didn't understand your instructions fully. I'll check back to tell you if it works after the restart.

I did it all again, restarted it after trashing and emptying the artwork cache and it is crashing again with the same crash notice as I pasted above. Should I just manually throwing away the artwork folder and restart. I await your response because you are the pro.

Jan 18, 2016 8:31 PM in response to listentoit

I have no use for "etrecheck" and I'm not interested in its output.

It looks like iTunes is crashing while trying to add an album picture. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell which one it is. There's also no easy way to tell whether the picture is corrupt, or there's just a bug in iTunes. If you upgraded from Snow Leopard, you must have a fairly old machine, and there have been bugs in iTunes that only affected certain old models that Apple probably never tested.

What I would do in your place is to move the library aside and create a new, empty one. Then I would import about half of the albums from the old library and test. If the crashing stopped, I would then import about half of the remaining albums and test again. If the crashing did not stop, I would remove about half of the first batch of albums. By continuing in this way, you could eventually isolate the bad album, or albums. Then you would have to choose between manually downloading artwork for all the other albums, or just getting rid of the bad album. You could also notify iTunes Support of the problem, and it might (or might not) be fixed in a few years.

Jan 18, 2016 9:36 PM in response to Linc Davis

I did just this when I restored all my songs through itunes match on the last rebuild of my entire system. It meant every song I imported came from Apple. It worked for about a week but I was missing some of my programs so I restored them from time machine. I didn't know if one of the programs made it happened, but that Artwork Manager thread crash was always the problem before.

Suddenly, the itunes crash cycle started all over again. I cannot stand to rebuild the computer all over again, but itunes crashing is the biggest issue. I'll do what you say but is there anything else you can think of since other users seem to have no problem getting artwork. I have google music player installed also to download all my music to in case itunes and match cannot be used in the future because of crashes. Could it be a reason for crashes?

Jan 19, 2016 5:04 AM in response to listentoit

Hello listentoit,

Exactly what programs did you reinstall? One of those is likely the culprit. Your EtreCheck report shows a crash from a "MusicManagerHelper". I'm sure that app is doing something with iTunes. You may have others that behave similarly. Apple has been updating iTunes pretty regularly and some of those old add-ons may not work anymore.

Jan 19, 2016 8:11 AM in response to listentoit

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. iTunes won't play music because sound is disabled, but otherwise it should work. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

The musicmanagerhelper seems to be part of Google Music Manager which allows you to upload your itunes library to their cloud and allow it to work like itunes match streaming music to your devices. I turned it off since it resides in my menu bar and itunes still crashes. I did go to console and copy what happens just before and at the crash (with music manager turned off) I get hundreds of these no valid sandbox extensions just before it crashes. Then the crash report to apple states the same thing everytime it crashes:

Crashed Thread: 27 Sharing Artwork Manager Worker Thread

From the console

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

Itunes stays open about 4-6 minutes or so now, but I just leave it open to see how long before it crashes. Should I throw the music manager app in the trash and empty it? It shouldn't be running in the background if I turned it off should it? When I go to system prefs it shows music manager and says it is not running.

Hello again listentoit,

I'm not familiar with how these iTunes add-ons function. My suggestion would be to remove it entirely, along with all other iTunes add-ons, until iTunes will stay running permanently.

If iTunes doesn't stay running permanently, even after removing all add-ons, then 4-6 minutes should be enough time to remove artwork. There are a number of suggestions here in the forums on how to do that. I strongly suggest starting a new thread in the iTunes forum to specifically ask how. iTunes is always changing and it would be best to get suggestions that will work in the most recent version. I didn't recommend this option before because you said iTunes crashed within 10-30 seconds. All of the suggestions on removing artwork say to do it from within iTunes itself. If you can do that, then you should be able to remove the artwork that is causing the new iTunes to choke.

Hello Linc,

It seems quite reasonable that an iTunes add-on would be interfering with iTunes. Removing it certainly won't hurt the operation of iTunes. If iTunes can be stabilized and run without crashing, then perhaps it can be reinstalled.

If you have some guaranteed way to solve the problem, I'm sure listentoit would like to know what that this is. Otherwise, you are just wasting people's time and engaging in your typical attacks designed to sow aggression and negativity.

Linc, I am in safe mode now, and ituens crashes in 1 minute 30 seconds after I see the program open. In that time, I went and made sure the get artwork command is still turned off, and then tryied to go and make sure anything I uploaded since Ocotober of last year had no artwork. When I did this it crashed again. This has happened about 5 times consistently. With Safe mode, are there any add ons or other programs that could affect itunes to make it crash? I apologize fro typos becuse with safe mode my tyoping makes the monitor flash and flicker when I type.

Are there itunes add ons or plug ins or extensions that I can look for and turn off or delete? Iv'e thrown away the entire artowrk folder and emptied trash too before I even started itunes.

Jan 20, 2016 3:18 PM in response to etresoft

Etresoft, does the etresoft program show any add ons or other things that attach, or attack itunes. I made sure music manager was turned off, and since it is just a program in the application folder I would believe it doesn't do anything until it is opened. But that doesn't mean some extension that it added didn't mess up itunes. Same question Are there itunes add ons or plug ins or extensions that I can look for and turn off or delete? Iv'e thrown away the entire artwork folder and emptied trash too before I even started itunes.
