Q: iTunes on iPhone showing music that I can't play

hi -

for or the past few months I have noticed songs on my iPhone's iTunes which can only be played if im on wifi, otherwise they are greyed out.

these songs are on my Windows iTunes but I actually never transferred/synced them over!

Is there any way of removing them, all I want is the songs I want on my iPhone, not all of them! Very annoying for playback too as unless I'm on wifi I cant press 'back/previous' to repeat a song, or if I have accidentally skipped a song.

of note, i manually sync my iPhone music, I don't use iCloud (as far as I know) and home sharing is off on my laptop and phone!

Cheers

    Hi Dlolver,

I understand that you are seeing all your songs but can't play all of them unless you are on Wi-Fi. That is something that I can help you out with.

Now what comes to mind with your situation is that you are seeing everything purchased from the iTunes Store or downloaded from Apple Music. If the content is not downloaded to your iPhone and you have a setting to not use Cellular Data, then you will get the prompt that you need Wi-Fi to listen to them. Take a look at the information below for more details on the settings of the music app.

    • Use Cellular Data: Allow Apple Music to stream over a cellular connection. Turn this option on to stream high-quality music over cellular. Turning on High Quality on Cellular uses more cellular data, and songs may take longer to start playing.

Now you do have the option to just show what is downloaded you your iPhone. You can do that by tapping on the category selector on the My Music tab and toggling on Only Downloaded Music. Take a look at the information below for more details.

    Using the new Music app

    Listen offline

You can download songs—including songs that you bought from the iTunes Store, added from Apple Music, or that were matched or uploaded with Apple Music or iTunes Match—to your device to listen to when you're not connected to the Internet:

    1. Tap the More Options icon  more options next to the item.
    2. Tap the download icon  to the right of the song's artwork at the top of the More Options menu, or tap Download from the bottom of the menu.
    3. The song downloads to your device.

To see music that you downloaded to listen to offline, go to My Music. Under the Recently Added section, tap the category selector (Artists, Albums, etc.). Only Downloaded Music is at the bottom of the category list. When this setting is on, My Music shows only songs that you downloaded to your device. Turn this setting off to see all of your music, including music stored in iCloud Music Library.

When you view an item that you've downloaded to your device, you'll see an offline icon offline indicator near it, but its exact location varies. For example:

    • If you download an entire album or playlist, the offline icon appears when you're looking at the album or playlist in My Music. You'll also see an offline icon when you view a compilation, but not when you view specific genres, artists, or composers.
    • If you download a song, the offline icon appears to the right of each song title.
    • If you download songs from an album, but not the entire album, the offline icon appears to the right of just the songs that you downloaded.

    Have a good day
