Q: 2012 iMac Backlight Off

Hello,

My friends iMac 2012 EMC 2544's screen backlight has stopped working. When running a hardware test we received                the error code:

                                                    4sns/1/4/40000001:vh1r-0.000g

I know the 4sns refers to a sensor but I cannot find anything more on this. Does anyone else have experience with                    this? I am trying to avoid taking it to Apple since my buddy is on an extreme budget. Any help would be greatly                            appreciated.

iMac, null

The bad news is that the hardware test reported a hardware problem.  Your buddy will need to take the iMac to the Apple Store or an APSP for repairs.

The good news is, if your buddy purchased the iMac w/a credit card he may be covered under their warranty.

Another possibility to check out if your buddy qualifies for free repairs:  iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support

It's very simple, the machine must be taken in for service! Even if you were able to determine which part has failed, getting it is another story.

I am sympathetic to the budget issues however he should take the computer to the local Apple Store for an estimate and then he can decide how to handle the finances. If no Apple Store is in your area, contact an AASP in the area and speak to them. If you don't know of an AASP in the area please click https://locate.apple.com/country to begin finding one.

BTW, if the machine is covered by AppleCare this would have been paid for. Going forward tell your friend to buy AppleCare! If he had AppleCare and it recently expired, then contact them anyway and see if they will accommodate him.

    Good luck!
