My iphoto garbage will not delete (empty). Over 4000 photos are in the garbage waiting for deletion. HELP!

That is probably the problem. The older versions of iPhoto have a bug and cannot empty the Trash, if the tRash is too full.
Take items back out of the Trash, until you only have a few hundred items there, then try to empty the Trash again.
