The words 'solid state drive' or SSD do not change the outcome, generally, if you search.

Other words or re-ordering them in the search text could bring up other concepts.

I've used external drives and other peripheral items on AirPort Extreme including USB hubs,

from earlier models, in the days of Orb 54K model. They did OK, but weren't recommended.

Good luck in this matter! 🙂

I assume that you are asking about the current "tower" shaped version of the AirPort Extreme.

The answer is yes, if the device will connect to the AirPort Extreme using the USB port and the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

You will need a drive that at least 2 to 3 times the capacity of the Mac that is going to be backed up to allow for a good backup history.

Just a comment.. SSD is wasted on USB 2 on an AE.. a slow spinning drive of impressively large capacity.. 2TB for example would be the same price as a 250GB SSD.. and would be the same speed.. USB over network is slow.. and using SSD will not speed things up at all.

Also USB drives of any type have a nasty tendency lately to drop off the network after a day or two. Reliability has become problematic.
