Aperture on external drive, EL Capitan question

Rebuilt MacBook Pro now with EL Capitan and no programs. Everything from my 10.7.5 drive is backed up on external drive.

Have read through others who have questions about Aperture, but can't find this question.

Do I move the older version of Aperture into the new drive and then call APP support to get Aperture 3.6 updated?

I have the boxed version so have the details on the box, but it is not listed as a purchase in the App store.

Next ?????

The App Store does no longer sell Aperture, and Aperture 3.6 is only available from the App Store, so you will need the help of the AppStore Support to be able to download Aperture 3.6, since your Aperture version is not an AppStore version.

I read the post you sent me, before, but there is nothing about having Aperture on an external drive, adding it into the new drive

I guess the biggest question is, if you call the App Store, are they helpful?

You need the help to be able to update to an Aperture version that will run on El Capitan. Only Aperture 3.6 is supported, and you can only update to this version, if your Aperture version is listed in your Purchase history as exülained in the link.

If Aperture does not appear in your Purchases history, contact the AppStore support and talk them into issuing a redeem code so you can download Aperture. That will not be easy, but some in cases the store was very helpful. You have to insist and ask to talkto a senior representative.

Hi Leonie,

Well, with the wonderful help from Apple, I now have Aperture 3.6 up and running on my El Capitan.

Now the problem is...(LOL) I can't find the Aperture Library on my back up drive. I tried 'migration assistant' but it didn't find it either.

I know it's there, but where?

Has anyone else ran into this problem?

I could put a bunch of pictures 'piecemeal' back into 3.6 but that would take forever.

HELP anyone !!

Where did you keep your Aperture library before the upgrade? Was it in your Pictures folder? And what kind of backup do you have? Is it a Time Machine backup or a clone of your old Mac?

HI again, and thanks for answering.

The Ap library just resided on the hard drive of the 10.7.5 system.

The entire drive was backed up by the Apple store onto a 2 TB external Seagate drive. (so it's there someplace but not listed).

PS...Have to thank you for the hows and how to's to get Apple to give me a code to get 3.6 and it only took an hour on the phone, with a wonderful young man named Jamal, he was very patient and kind. So thank you Leonie.

By default the Aperture Library would be in the Pictures folder.

If you open your restored Pictures folder, what are seeing there?

The Pictures folder is not showing in the sidebar on El Capitan.

The Pictures folder has to be added to the sidebar manually.

Open the Finder Preferences:

Click somewhere onto the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, then go to the Finder menu in the main menu bar, open "Preferences".
Click the Sidebar tab and add all items to the sidebar, that you want to show.

Now open the Pictures folder from the sidebar in the Finder. Is your Aperture Library there?

Well, On the Seagate backup drive, there is no pictures folder anywhere.

I see what you are saying but am really dismayed the backup doesn't show anything, not even grayed out.

When I ask to switch libraries within Aperture (3.6 now) this is what I get:

The Aperture Library could not be created at “/Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/Backups.backupdb/patti’s MacBook Pro/2016-01-21-122055/Macintosh HD/Users/pattibradfield/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. Check the path and try again.

The library is part of a time machine backup. So it should be restored from that location with Time Machine.

Check, if has been restored by Migration Assistent. It should have been restored directly to your home folder :

/Users/pattibradfield/Aperture Library.aplibrary

Is it there, when you look at the top level of your Home folder?

I gave and tried the old way. Dragged and dropped my big Aperture library into the new drives picture library...it took 3 hours to combine, but this picture (if it will show up here) is brought to you by EL Capitan with Aperture 3.6 working well.

Picture is too big, but it does work.
