The method is to pre-determine the type of performance and application load

you may put on the device once you have and are using it, and pre-buy the

expected level of hardware to meet the demand your applications and system

may need to function.

There are no upgradeable component memory chips on the logic board of these;

there are no 'slots' to upgrade, the RAM is permanently affixed to the logic board.

So, you buy the level of computer hardware you expect to need. You can order

a custom build direct from Apple Store online, that may not be available in the

retail or authorized reseller store; however those locations may also order them.

The mid to higher spec models offer more than just RAM memory, they can also

offer higher spec graphic or other additional upgrade per their market niche.

Check the specs at the Apple Store online for the present line of Mac Mini.

For the former model specs check with everymac.com or mactracker.ca.

The previous models (to Oct 2014) with user upgradeable RAM

were replaced with the present build series that has no such option.

That was known as Late 2012 series, replaced by Late 2014. And it

was produced for two years, 2012 to 2014. Certain hardware features

were dropped and others adopted for the newer version.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

To find out, the type and year of the Mac doesn't matter as much as which version of OSX you are running.

With the caveat that this varies depending on which version of OSX is running:

To get the answer to your question:

Click the Apple icon in the upper left of your screen, then --> about this mac

Then click on "more info", then click on "memory" tab

You should eventually see how much memory you have of what type and whether you can install or not.

If you have a model with user installable memory, there should be another box to click to get instructions.

The last model of Mac mini that had upgradable memory was late 2012, sold until 2014. You can also go to everymac.com and type in your serial number to find out more about what is really upgradable.
