Q: ORF files blanked out in Photos

I have migrated to Photos having previously used Aperture and before that iPhotos. In Photos many, but not all, ORF files (Olympus Raw Files) are blanked out. This problem did not exist in Aperture or iPhotos. I have discussed this with Apple Support (case 1031059591) who could not offer a solution. They suggested I wait for the next Photos update, which might or might not provide a solution!

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution?

Try rotating the thumbnails 90º one direction and then 90º back.  See if that will recover the thumbnails.

Have you tried to reprocess the RAW files?

Select one of the black thumbnails, double click the photo to enlarge it, go to edit mode and select "Reprocess RAW".

if you cannot get to the edit mode at all, the original image file may be missing.

Hum strange... "Reprocess Raw" is grey for all files (those that are blanked out and those that are not) and therefore can't be used.

Then the RAW processing has not changed.

Can you export the original files from Photos? Then you could test, if you can open them in Preview, in the software that came with your camera, or another RAW converter, eg., Adobe Photo Shop.

    Hello leonie,

I have exported some files. They all show as ORF files and they open up perfectly in Preview.

Then I imported them and they are not blank.

Thank you, I seem to have a fix.

But I don't relish the process for several hundred photos so I'm keen to discover the cause.

Have you already tried to repair the Photos Library?

Then try this: Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support

Regenerate missing thumbnails with library repair tool

If a large number of your pictures' thumbnails are missing, you can regenerate them with the Photos library repair tool:

    1. Quit Photos.
    2. Open Photos while pressing the Command and Option keys.
    3. Click Repair in the dialog that appears.

This process recreates thumbnails for all the master images stored in your Photos library.

Note: If you use iCloud Photo Library with Photos, this action will cause Photos to re-upload all your pictures.

But if you are using iCloud Photo Library be prepared to wait for your complete library t upload again to iCloud Photo Library. That can take several days for a large library.

Photos has lost the connection to the originals, but discovers them again when you are exporting.  Where is your Photos Library stored? In the Pictures folder or on an external drive? Are you using File Vault to encrypt the home folder?

I have seen a few cases were file vault caused this erratic behaviour with iPhoto Libraries and aperture libraries. I suspect the problem persists with Photos.  If your photos are not top secret, I'd move the Photos Library out of the encrypted range of your Home folder. If the original image files are referenced, they should also not be in a folder that is encrypted by file vault.

I never encountered the problem with either iPhotos or Aperture.

How might I move the Photos Library out of the encrypted range of my Home folder?

I never encountered the problem with either iPhotos or Aperture.

I had the problem with Aperture whenever I enabled file vault. The referenced images continually were reported as missing and I had to reconnect them.  I stopped using file vault and all was back to normal.

How might I move the Photos Library out of the encrypted range of my Home folder?

That is not easy with  File Vault 2 on El Capitan, because it does not only encrypt the home folder but the complete Mac. You could put the Photos Library on an external drive or disable File vault and put your sensitive data on a password encrypted sparse bundle instead. That is what I am doing.

But before you go to the trouble, you may want to test, if your Photos library is working better, if you test with a copy on an external drive, that is not encrypted. Do the thumbnails remain correct, if you use the library outside of file vault?

I don't want to set up an external drive so I'm going to move confidential data to a sparse image file that I already set up for for client data. I'll then disable FileVault and see what happens.
