Power cord melting (MagSafe 2 - 2013)

I've got a 2013 model MacBook Air. While charging the power cord started smoking/melting at about 5cm from the connector which is attached to the MacBook. Before this happened there was no visible damage to be seen on the power cord.

Has anyone seen this before and is it worth reporting to Apple since the adapter is out of warranty?

Thanks Limnos,

Odd enough I have seen quite a few video's on youtube telling how to repair a broken cord, some describing the same reason for failure. Having said that, I need to correct my previous statement; the power cord started melting at approximately 5cm from the adapter and not near the connector.

Despite the end of warranty I'd think that Apple would be keen on becoming aware of 'thermal events' which can cause different implications than only having a defective, not functioning product. After all, the adapter is still a current product.
