Q: iPad will not recognise SD card reader or camera connection kit (USB) though charges OK via Lightning connector

My iPad A1458 does not automatically recognise the SD card reader (with or without card present) or the camera connection kit (USB socket), with either a camera connected or an analogue-to-digital audio device, as I believe it should. I suspect a fault in the Lightning connector, although it seems to charge OK and it has linked via the cable to my iMac. Am I missing something obvious?
