Q: Reorganizing files

I have a question that hopefully some kind soul can help me out with.  Over the years I have had my iMac my documents folder has gotten photographs saved in it and photographs have been saved in other files besides my photo file.  I dont know how this happened but I was wondering if there was an easy way to get these photographs out of the wrong files and into the correct photo files.  In other words, when it is all said and done Id like to have just documents in my document folder.  And in my personal file I have set up for my personal files, i.e. tax returns, insurance papers and things like that it also has photos in it as well.  So as I said, I was wondering if there was a relatively easy way to get this problem resolved because as you can tell from my problem I dont know a whole lot about file structure on a Mac.  Any help anyone could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

    Tommy (love your silk shirts),

You have created a mess, the best method is to use Finder to locate the files then to move them to the location you want them in.

I was expecting something like this but I was just wondering if there was ANYTHING I could do or try before I start that process of moving files and folders around   By the way, I wish I was the real Tommy Bahama and Id just hire someone to do this for me!  lol  Anyway, if there is anyone who has any thoughts or suggestions I could try before I take on this undertaking I would appreciate it.

    Thanks once again.

I agree that it needs to be done manually; my suggestion would be that you might want to create some new folders on your desktop temporarily to simply help you organize the photos. So, you could have them by the year for instance - line them up and then start opening the folders you have photos in - highlight each one, figure out where you want it, and drag it to the new folder. Of course, that'll take a while, but when you're done, you can put all of those new folders into your main Photo folder and you'll have it organized perfectly. When you get new photos, simply put them in the right place right away - I usually take a look at mine and if they don't need any editing, I name it ("beach trip1") and put it in the corresponding folder ("2015").

Please forgive me asking another question about this situation Im in but is it possible to click on one of the function keys like the control, or option or command buttons to click on one of the files I want to move to turn it blue and then can I select all the ones I have marked and move them all to a new folder or file?  If someone knows if this would work or not I really would appreciate it and it would save me a tremendous amount of time as well.  So if someone could tell me if that is possible to do, again I would greatly appreciate it.

Again, you can use Finder's new Tags feature. If you don't know or understand them please look over OS X: Tags help you organize your files - Apple Support

You can click on one file and then hit the Shift key and select other files. If you are using the Finder window in Column View (which is the only way I use it), then you can use that method but it means that everything will be selected between the first click and the Shift (second) click.
