Q: Adding LaserWriter 4/600 PS

Hi there, folks

I have an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS that I do NOT know how to configure/add printer.

I have a LocalTalk to Ethernet Bridge (Dayna Mini EtherPrint) and a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Hub.

I previously had no printer(s) and/or Ethernet device(s)/service(s). Using Wi-Fi for Internet Access.

Do I need the Ethernet hub or can I just connect with the LocalTalk to Ethernet Bridge?

I have previously used the Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS on a Windoze PC running OS XP and a Power Macintosh 8600.

My particulars: MacMini (4,1), OS X (10.6.8).

Any insight/input/info would be greatly appreciated

Thank You for your time, James

    Jan,

Thanks for the info about the power supply output (voltage/amperage/polarity).

So, NEVER over run the voltage & NEVER under run the amperage.

I will keep this info @ the ready when I'm looking for a power supply.

Magnifying glass is @ on hand...

    Thx, Jan (James)

    Update...

The AEBS electrical input: 5.1V/2.4A/polarity [outside/collar/sleeve: negative; inside/female/center: positive].

So, a high-quality power supply with @ least 5V & 2.5A, with a polarity of an outside (negative) & an inside (positive).

Than your for your time, James

    James,

Since there possibly could be different local versions of one base station model, I just wanted you to confirm the power input values in the text. I have not tested a third-party power adapter with this base station, so you would have to proceed at your own risk.

Generally speaking, providing that you have a device with a single input as mentioned earlier (5.1V DC 2.4A), and that there is an icon showing the polarity to be plus to the centre pin, a good universal (output 5V DC and approximately 3A) power adapter could probably be used. Such adapters do often have a set of plug adapters. Unfortunately, my knowledge about the quality level for power adapters from US suppliers/retailers is limited, so I cannot really give you any advice.

EDIT: Noticed your update after posting the message.

Greetings from across the "Pond", Jan

I've been still unable to get a hold of the supplier/vendor I got the AEBS from (Red Rum)!

As for an alternative source for the power supply for the AEBS?

I was thinking of either getting a "replacement" power supply from a current AEBS to see how closely it would "match" the "old" AEBS power supply.

Or maybe an Apple Authorized Service Provider may have an "old" AEBS power supply sitting around, and/or I could go to the "Apple Store/Mothership" and see what they would suggest for a suitable replacement AEBS power supply?

I've looked on the WWW for a power supply, a few with the correct voltage, but NOT a near match for amperage.

Jan, another way that the amperage could be expressed is in millamps, i.e., 2.4A could be expressed as 2400 millamps?

    Thx, Jan (James)

Yes, that is correct (also expressed as mA).

Another example: 5V DC and 3A (or 3000mA) would result in a power rating of 15W.

Some power adapters may have selectable output voltages. Always check the current handling ability for the exact voltage of interest. You should find several universal power adapters through a web search if you include voltage and current values. Once again, look for quality.

Greetings from the former colonies, Jan

Jan, I posted a query to the Apple Support Communities: Re: Replacement AEBS Power Supply?

I received a response from a fine gentlemen by the name of Bob Timmons of the Lone Star state of Texas!

Bob provided me with a link to an item @ Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/UpBright%C2%AE-Adapter-T012A051-Airport-Extreme/dp/B00IPWM S46

I replied to Bob's post with "This solved my question" and gave Bob high praise for his efforts on my behalf.

Jan, I've ordered the item and am happily awaiting it's arrival between 9/2/16–12/2/16.

When I receive the replacement power supply for the AEBS, I will test the output with a digital multi-meter before using with the AEBS.

I am hoping that with the AEBS, I can FINALLY connect the iBook SE with the WPA security protocol.

Jan, I will post my results with the AEBS/iBook SE sometime next week.

    Thx, Jan (James)

Greetings from the Frozen Republic of West Cambridge (MA), Jan

The power supply (PS) for the AEBS was to be delivered on Saturday (6/2/16), but the weather did not cooperate!

But the PS did arrive on Monday (8/2/16).

I tested the PS with a digital multi-meter before using with AEBS. Voltage is a little over 5V DC & the amperage is a little over 2A.

The AEBS appears to be getting enough power and is operating, i.e., lights up.

Initially, I tried to configure the AEBS via Wi-Fi with the MacMini on 8/2/16, No Soap!

Earlier today (10/2/16), I connected the AEBS to the router with a 50 foot cable (Router: LAN; AEBS: WAN). Still, No Soap!

Next, I connected the AEBS to the Ethernet hub (MacMini/AEBS) & Signs of Life!

I have used either the WAN and/or LAN port on the AEBS. Should I use one over the other when configuring the AEBS?

Do I need to have the AEBS connected to the router via the WAN/LAN port to configure the AEBS?

Both AirPort Utility (5.6.1) & AirPort Extreme Firmware Updater (5.7) "see" the AEBS, but I keep getting errors when trying to do anything with the AEBS.

The reset button on the AEBS has been used, both with a short & a longer duration as suggested by the documentation/manual. Still, No Soap!

I have taken a number of screen shots showing the results from AirPort Utility & AirPort Extreme Firmware Updater.

Maybe these screen shots could help you (Jan) with trying to figure out what is going on with the AEBS?

I am a little lost @ this point, Jan. I hope you can help, Jan. Jan, if this a little beyond your expertise maybe Grant could help.

    Hello James,

Regarding a general base station setup and any firmware updates, I suggest that you post a new question under the AirPort discussions. The experts there will know how to handle configuration matters under various operating systems, etc. It may be a good idea to include information about both the Mini and the iBook SE.

    Good luck!

    Hi there, Jan

    Just an update!

The iBook SE AirPort card (firmware: 9.52) DOES work with WPA security protocol on the AEBS (A1034; firmware: 5.6).

The AEBS is/was configured with software (AirPort Admin Utility: 4.2) using the iBook SE.

She (the AEBS A1034) has flown a few mission(s) & has performed quite well for her age, w/o signs of hostile alien invader(s) trying to board her!

And now, if I can get Printopia working correctly on the client (MacMini). That would be the Katz' Meow!

    Have A Great Day!
