Q: Apple Pay and 9.2.1

Upgraded my 6s to 9.2.1 this morning.  Later in the day I tried to use Apple Pay at a location where it had previously worked flawlessly (Walgreens), and both loyalty and credit cards failed.  After that, I powered it down and restarted . . . but also noticed that Wallet was not toggled "on" in iCloud settings.  I don't remember if turning that on was part of the initial set-up . . . must that be on for Apple Pay to work? (Haven't been able to find anything that specifically addresses that).  If it was previously on, then the update apparently knocked it off.  If it doesn't have to be on, what's causing the issue?  Will try again, but it's less than ideal to be futzing around when there are people in line.

Nope.  It did not turn off for me (I updated to iOS 9.2.1 yesterday, and used Apple Pay successfully today).

Also check Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and make sure the settings make sense.

I infer from your reply that Wallet is turned "on" in iCloud settings for you.  Nothing is different in Wallet & Apple Pay settings from before.  I still have my original question . . . does Wallet have to be turned "on" in iCloud settings for Apple Pay to work?  If so, then mine was "on" before the update, and I did not manually turn it off.

It does not need to be on. I've never had it on for my phone and Apple Pay has worked just fine.

All that Settings > iCloud > Wallet does is include your passes in other iOS devices.

Yes, mine had been "on" and remained "on" after the iOS update.  But that should not matter related to your Apple Pay functionality on the iPhone.

But I think you should infer from the fact that this setting was changed by your update that something unusual happened related to your settings - which may have affected Apple Pay as well as iCloud.  Check all your settings carefully to see if they make sense.

Thanks for all the input.  If Wallet in iCloud doesn't need to be on, then it probably never was.  Now I need to figure out what caused the issue.  Did not notice anything different in settings, but will review again before trying Apple Pay again.

It could also be that Walgreens was having issues with their scanner. The Walgreens I generally go to couldn't accept Apple Pay last week. Trader Joe's is hit or miss with my Apple Watch but almost always works with my phone.

That did occur to me today, after it worked fine at a Subway.  Will just have to keep an eye on it.  Except for that instance, it has worked very well for me.  I would use it exclusively if I could, though options are limited in my area.  Sure hope it gains acceptance and starts showing up everywhere.

I agree. And it's even more fun with the Apple Watch!
