Q: missing loops in Logic 10.2.1 and download failure

2 part question...

QUESTION 1: WHERE ARE MY MISSING LOOPS? HOW CAN I FIND THEM, RECOVER THEM, DOWNLOAD THEM?

(1) My Logic Pro 10.2.1 (updated on 1/20/16) is missing a bunch of loops from the loop browser.  They are greyed out and won't play.

For example, these loops are greyed out:

"Amazing" spoken word

"Attention" spoken word

Asian Gamelan 01

Asian Gamelan 02

Asian Gamelan 03

Asian Gamelan 04

Asian Gamelan 05

Asian Gamelan 06

but Asian Gamelans 07 thru 21 are NOT greyed out, they are fine!

I know these missing loops were working in Logic 9. I recently deleted Logic 9 since I haven't used it since getting Logic Pro X in November of 2015.

I probably have these missing loops on my Time Machine backup if all the missing loops were present in Logic 9.

But In the last couple of days (before 10.2.1 was released)  I made sure I'd downloaded all the additional content to Logic Pro X. And it was all showing as "Installed".  Then after getting 10.2.1 today, I attempted to download ALL the additional content again. It all downloaded fine, except for 'Download All Additional Sounds"...  (See Question 2).   So question 1 is:  WHERE ARE THESE MISSING LOOPS?  IF  YOU DOWNLOAD ALL THE ADDITIONAL CONTENT FOR 10.2.1, SHOULDN'T ALL MY LOGIC 9 LOOPS (ESPECIALLY THE ONES LISTED ABOVE) SHOW UP AND WORK?

QUESTION 2: WHY DOES 'Download All Additional Sounds' (only 18.3 MB) consistently fail, 5 seconds remaining, with a bogus 'check your internet connection' message?

After getting 10.2.1, I made sure I downloaded all the additional content. It all shows as installed, with one

exception:  When I try to 'Download All Additional Sounds', it downloads right up to the 18.3 MB mark, (which is the total size to be downloaded),

with 5 seconds remaining, but then consistently (I've tried it 10 times)  fails with this message: "Logic Pro X was not able to complete the download. Check your internet connection and try downloading again."   The internet connection is fine and not dropping out at all.  I've checked that all the 'go to sleep' options are on 'Never', and I've run Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.

I see in the release notes that the programming for downloading additional content has been changed in 10.2.1.   I can't help but be suspicious

there is some kind of overly aggressive code which is causing this download failure.  But I can always try again in the morning.  It's only

18.3 MB for the 'Complete Sound Library', all the other many GB's of additional content download OK, they are all showing 'Installed'.  I'm only

having trouble (that I can't fix) with the option to 'Download All Additional Sounds'.

Thank you so so so much for any help with my missing loops and download failure.

I had greyed out loops as well "Reindex All Loops" from the menu at the top of the loop browser cured it for me.

At 5 secs to go, its at that point that the Download manager wants to install whatever it downloaded and it usually asks for your Computer's account password to enable it to do so. No request for password and it fails...

For those that have had this issue in the past,  it always comes down to a permissions related issue....which is not easily resolved.

To test however, create a new admin account in Sys prefs, log into that and try again, If it works then you know you do have a permissions related problem...

Thank you. This helped me find "Reindex All Loops".  I ran it and now the greyed out loops disappeared completely.

For example in Logic 9 I always was able to select 'Pig Grunt', and "Amazing Spoken Word" and many others from the Loop Browser.

At some point (I don't know what point)  in Logic X those two loops and dozens and dozens of loops became greyed out.

Now, after running 'Reindex All Loops' , the loops that were greyed out yesterday are completely absent from the loop browser.

Since I had these loops before I'm pretty sure I still have them somewhere, maybe on a Time Machine backup if they've been deleted

from my hard drive.  Maybe they were deleted when I uninstalled Logic 9? Or are the missing loops all from GarageBand maybe?

Yesterday I was trying to demo Garage Band (which I NEVER use) to a student, and GarageBand would not run, gave a missing loop index error.

I will try Art of Sound's suggestions to complete the download of 'Download All Available Sounds'.  Maybe my missing loops are in that download?

    quick summary:

Logic 9 worked great for a long time.

In November 2015 I upgraded to Logic Pro X, love it.

    Yesterday I upgraded to 10.2.1.

AT SOME POINT,dozens and dozens of loops went missing from the Loop Browser.

My goal is to download ALL additional content and have ALL my loops available, including Pig Grunt and all the ones I had in Logic 9.

I've been able to download ALMOST all additional content.  Still stuck on 'Download All Available Sounds.'   Working on the 5 sec remaining issue on that.

That is what I'm working on, and thank you again for any help.

Pig Grunt is actually a Final Cut Pro X library sound....

I cannot find any reference to an 'Amazing Spoken Word' audio file or loop on any of my systems here... I have LP9. LPX GB and FCPX with all content, on such systems..

Art of Sound, thank you.....I created a new Sys Admin account, restarted, signed on with the new Sys Admin account,  started up Logic Pro 10.2.1, waited for it to scan all my plug-ins, then tried 'Download All Available Sounds'. I got exactly the same hang up at 5 seconds: "Logic Pro X was not able to complete the download. Check your internet connection and try downloading again."  As I said, this hang up is not because of an internet connection dropping.  As you said, it's probably a permission problem.  It NEVER asks me to enter my password like it did on most of the other 'Additional Content' downloads I successfully did yesterday.  This is the only content download that fails - consistently. I don't know squat about permissions. I only ever sign on as the admin, one computer, one user - me.

The option to 'Download All Available Sounds' brings up a download of something called 'Complete Sound Library', showing as a measly 18.3MB.

I want to have ALL additional content available is why I keep trying to download it.

QUESTION: Is there a direct link anywhere to download this content ("Complete Sounds Library")?

QUESTION: What is inside the 'Complete Sounds Library'?

QUESTION: What does the new option 'Reinstall Sound Library' do?

P.S.  the "Amazing" spoken word loop is just a guy saying 'Amazing'. There was always whole little group of spoken word loops like "Oh Yeah", etc etc... All missing now.  I used "Amazing" on one of my very first Logic 9 projects. I guess I will hunt for the loops I know are missing, on my Time Machine, to see if that helps me find them.  Also I would swear I used to have a loop category called 'Animals', gone now.  I have created dozens of playful recordings with young students,  in Logic 9 and Logic 10 (before yesterday) using Dog Bark loops.  Now those are all gone. My unverified hunch is that the loops I am talking about, that are now missing,  came from GarageBand and I have either deleted them along with uninstalling Logic 9, or maybe 10.2.1 has purposefully left them out, or they are just misplaced for some reason I don't know.

QUESTION: Is there a direct link anywhere to download this content ("Complete Sounds Library")?

No, though someone might find the direct link eventually but Apple doesn't provide them....

QUESTION: What is inside the 'Complete Sounds Library'?

No idea.. it doesn't show that in my Manager.... Where are you seeing that?

QUESTION: What does the new option 'Reinstall Sound Library' do?

It re-downloads all essential and additional content even if you have already downloaded some or all of it already

    Again, that folder of sounds comes from the FCP SFX library....... normally found at;

    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Final Cut Pro Sound Effects/Animals

WHY SOME LOOPS ARE MISSING (THEORY)

OK I found the missing loops in my Time Machine from before I installed Logic Pro X.

In my Logic 9, which was the full-blow 'Studio' version including 'Soundtrack Pro', etc, etc, it had a folder within Apple Loops called Soundtrack Pro.

It has a similar folder for GarageBand loops. For example if your Loop Browser DOES show 'Asian Gamelan 07' but does NOT show 'Asian Gamelan 01',

you have the same problem I've just had - your GarageBand loops that you had in Logic 9 are GONE when you update to 10.X.  (Theory).  Or they are GONE because you uninstalled Logic 9 (Alternate Theory).

I think all my missing loops are found now.  Later I will copy those old folders from Time Machine and try to install them into 10.2.1's Loop Browser, that should work fine I would think.

I think  Logic 10.2 or Logic 10.2.1  intentionally deleted those folders upon updating. (Theory 1)

The Folder names are different now. The Soundtrack Pro folder within 'Apple Loops' is gone.  I can detail out the relevant folder names  later....  Or possibly

I caused these folders to disappear when I uninstalled Logic 9?  (Theory 2) I do not know, but I am glad I found my missing loops on my Time Machine!!!!!

ANSWER to Art of Sound Question: The 18.3MB download called 'Complete Sound Library' is what is downloaded (on my system) when I select "Download All Available Sounds".

HOW TO FIX DOWNLOAD FAILURE at 5 seconds:  I don't know yet.

    Ok.. after doing some research....

In order for the missing GB loops from LP9 to appear in LPX you must...

    Quit LPX..

Open LP9 and via it's download manager.. update the LP9 Garageband Loop content.. (and any other updates that appear in the download manager list.. They will show as either Incomplete or as Updates..)

LP9 will then reindex its loop content automatically

You will then find that the missing content such as the Gamelan loops, will appear...

Now quit LP9 and launch LPX

Re-index Loops...in LPX's Loop Browser Drop down menu

The missing content will appear in LPX's loop browser...

Thank you....This procedure will help others. In my case I deleted LP9 about a week ago, I'm not likely to re-install it.

Since finding my all missing loops on a Time Machine backup, I have imported them into LPX's loop browser no prob. Yay!

Now that the missing loops are back in service, I don't care exactly HOW or WHEN they went missing, but I know it was either when I deleted Logic 9, or it was something Logic X did.

All I seem to be missing now is the measly 18.3MB of 'Complete Sound Library'

which is downloaded when I selected 'Download All Available Sounds' in Logic Pro 10.2.1

My system downloads all 18.3MB out of 18.3MB of it,  then hangs at 5 seconds without asking for a password,

giving the inappropriate message every time (and I've tried 20 times, so enough already with me trying): "Logic Pro X was not able to complete the download. Check your internet connection and try downloading again."

I have no idea what's in that 18.3MB of 'Complete Sound Library', but I guess I can live on without it for now.

Since ALL of my other app and content downloads have downloaded and installed just fine thank you,

I have to suspect a bug in the code for this particular 'Complete Sound Library' download rather than the typical fixes for this

message like faulty internet connection, 'you need to try Ethernet', permission problems, etc.

I tried booting my Mac in safe mode, since one user on this forum said that fixed this message for him.

But then Logic basically would not load in safe mode.  I got the pinwheel for 5 minutes and bailed out.

Im not sure why you deleted Logic Pro 9 as it only saved you about 800MB in doing so unless you uninstalled anything else at the same time... as having LP9 to open up older projects is always useful.

    Anyhow...

In every case I have dealt with this issue.. The  '5 secs to go' problem.. .. has been caused by a permissions issue.... because you are not getting the "Enter Password" dialog box... which is required to properly install the content in the system locations it needs to access to do so.

I tried booting my Mac in safe mode, since one user on this forum said that fixed this message for him.

But then Logic basically would not load in safe mode.  I got the pinwheel for 5 minutes and bailed out.

This is another symptom of the fact you have an issue with your system drive and permissions or corruption related problem..  i suspect as that should work without issue...

As to why the new Sys Account fix didn't work for you may indicate a deeper problem.... and you should investigate that.

You might want to run etrecheck (The ever excellent free diagnostic tool) and post up its results here if you would like someone to take a look/see in case you have something else installed on your system that is causing a conflict or issue...

    http://etrecheck.com/

Finally what do the specific Logic related console logs show at the time this issue occurs?

Well at the end of the 2nd day, I ran "Verify Permissions" again, and "Repair Permissions" again, and "Verify Disk" again (in Disk Utility).

I tried 'Download All Available Sounds' for the 30th time in two days.  This time it DID ask for a password, and finish successfully.

I still don't know what's in that download.  It was only 18.3MB on my system.  Anyway it finished.

Many thanks again Art of Sound!!!!
