Q: Can we upgrade Aperture 2.1.4  to 3.6 for El Capitan use

I have Aperture 2.1.4  running on my ageing MacBook and want to upgrade to 3.6 so that our photo library can be used on my wife's new Mac Mini running El Capitan. At some time we will have to address which photo editing option we shift to but would rather delay for a few months. Can this be done even though Apple no longer support Aperture?

The upgrade from Aperture 2.1.4 to Aperture 3.6 is a paid purchase. And Apple stopped selling Aperture.

Aperture 3.6 has never been available outside the Mac AppStore, so you cannot buy it anywhere.  The Aperture 3 installer disks from Amazon or Ebay will only install early Aperture 3 versions, that cannot run on El Capitan.

You will need the help of Apple Support to obtain a copy of Aperture 3.6. But they will probably tell you, that there is nothing they can do.

But you can open and browse your Aperture 2.1.4 libraries in the new Photos for Mac, that comes with El Capitan.  It can migrate Aperture 2 libraries.

Photos is not as versatile as Aperture is, but it will migrate most of your Metadata, albums, edits, so you can access your photos while you are trying to find a replacement for Aperture. See:    How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
