After upgrading to El Capitan, my standard user is now a mobile user, And I cannot sign in.

So, the other day, I upgraded one of my computers to El Capitan; I've already upgraded several others with no issues.


The computer functioned just fine all day. I shut it down when I left the office, and booted it back up this morning, and now it will not accept my login credentials.


I was able to log in to the administrator account on the computer and noticed that under user prefs, My standard account is now listed as a mobile account?! There doesn't seem to be any preferences that would lend to a fix for this.

I haven't been able to find anyone else who has had an issue like this.


My computer is an iMac14,2. 27-inch, late 2013. 3.2 GHz i5. 24 GB RAM. OS version 10.11.2

The only way I know to setup a client Mac with a Mobile account is to log into the Mac as a Network user. Then, the Mobile: Create shows up for that user in the System Preferences/Users & Groups.


Have you tried logging in as the Admin on that Mac and see if you can change your User account back to Standard?

Is the Mac you're logging into have a Network Account Server defined?

I've seen this a couple of times, seems to happen with Centrify if it's not been updated. Two fixes I've used:


boot into Single User Mode (cmd-s) and use the following command:


(This one regenerates the authentication database)


/sbin/mount -uw /

mv /var/db/auth.db /var/db/auth.db.old



If that doesn't work, you can also try re-running the setup assistant, which creates an admin account (you can then simply log in and change the other account to an administrator in Users & Groups). To do so, you have to remove the file that tells the OS the setup assistant doesn't need to run, again in Single User Mode:


/sbin/mount -uw /

rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

Should've read a bit closer the first time, not exactly the same problem as I had!


From the fact you've got a Directory Admin user, that seems to suggest you're joined to a domain. So try removing the binding and re-joining, or ask the "Directory Admin" to do it if you don't have those privileges.


If that doesn't work, you may find you have to remove the user, rename the home folder and recreate the local user and/or do the above.
