I pod nano cannot be restored

I have a 5th generation I pod nano. Tried to transfer new music. My computer locks up every time i plug it in. I received a message that it could be corrupt and needed to be restored. I attempted this w no luck. I read how to put the device in disc mode which i did but my computer just locks up. It doesn't give me the option to restore. I reinstalled the apple software as suggested. I have the latest I tunes and my computer is all up to date. The usb port is not damaged and came w my I pad. It is not a 3rd party device. The ipod device never shows up in devices when connected. What can i do to fix this?

As a test, shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices. You can leave standard USB keyboard and mouse connected, if used. Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod.

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on computer. You can also do this with iPod in Disk Mode.
