Jan 21, 2016 4:15 PM in response to abrown59by léonie,On Mavericks you need iPhoto 9.5.1, and that update is no longer available. apple stopped the developement of iPhoto and you can only update iPhoto by reinstalling from the app Store, and that requires that you own a version of iPhoto that appears in your Purchase History at the AppStore. Are you seeing iPhoto on the forth tab of the AppStore? Purchases?
In that case you can update iPhoto to the most current version of iPhoto after you upgrade to El Capitan. Then you can install iPhoto 9.6.1 as described in Barney's User Tip: : Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store)
If you cannot update, because you do not have an AppSTore version of iPhoto, upgrade to El Capitan and open your iPhoto Library in the new Photos for Mac application. It will be able to work with your iPhoto Library.

Photos is the successor to iPhoto, after Apple stopped the iPhoto developement.
