The 5th gen iPod nano has very small built-in speakers. So you can listen to music without any headphones (although it does not sound very good for music). I think this feature is there because the 5th gen iPod nano also has a built-in camera for taking (not just playing) videos. There are no other iPods (except iPod touch) with built-in speakers or a camera.
Answering your own question:
You can only hear songs through the earphone, or a bluetooth setup. It doesn't have an external speaker like, say, the iPod Touch.
