Logic pro for film post production?

Hi! I´m wondering if anyone of you are using Logic for film post production? I´m thinking about dialog editing, FX-editing and surroundmixing.

I work as a composer but are getting jobs of this kind and most of the people around me are into ProTools and Nuendo but not Logic...

It would be cool if any of you could share any experince of this kind. Havn´t looked at Soundtrack yet.

well I don't personally use logic for post prod.. but.. a while ago on this forum, like a year or maybe a bit longer ago, there were people absolutely screaming with frustration over certain advertised features in logic for post prod not working properly or at all. apparently the XML and OMF import/export was a total disaster area, either causing big crashes, or not importing things fully.. just plain not working at all reliably enough for anyone that does post prod to be happy.
so, you'll want to check that this stuff has been sorted out in the meantime or you might have some trouble. btw, a few of the people that were really upset about this stuff seem to have disappeared from this forum.. I've been away for a while but I don't seem to see them posting any more since I got back. so maybe they did finally do what they were threatening to do and give up on logic for post prod work and have moved on to something else.

Martin,
I just finnished a project with Logic and had no hitches moving back and forth between Final Cut Pro. I exported XML from FCP to Logic. Prep Logic with the correct Sample Rate and Smpte Rate. Import the XML v3 file and all the Audio from FCP came in. My new fav key command "CMD/SHFT/T. Shifts selected region to selected track. Split all audio segments to different tracks. Made all the edits, bounced stereo file back to FCP. No problems. I teach a class in sound design using Logic, really works well. If you go the Protools LE route, to do everything I can do in Logic you have to purchase the DV Toolkit which gives you extra OMF import/export and SMPTE stuff, it's not cheap.

OMF is tricksy but it can work. do dry runs with your collaborater first. the judgement that OMF is a disaster in logic is, i am sad to say, correct.

AAF is far better, but with both AAF and OMF you have to make sure that there are no audio files in the timeline with differing sample rates. most video editors support playing audio at different sample rates and if this turns up in an OMF AAF or XML logic flaps its hands and sulks.

there is nothing wrong with using logic for post production work - its audio features are fine and i have done post work on it myself for smallish projects where they wanted to save a little money. logic is perfectly capable.

Great! I will try it out eventually, alltough the videomaterial and AAF-files will come from an Avid system and not Final Cut but it shouldn´t matter...

As for what I understand, OMF has allways been a little unstable (and the guy who inventet it took his secrets to the grave) so AAF and MXF are more or less standad today.

The DV Toolkit for ProTools LE is something that I more or les must buy...it´s a shame that it costs just as much as the complete Locig Pro 😟

Mmm. Agreed. I just finished an hour long music documentary and did all the post in Logic. I did have an advantage because I edited the film in FCP myself on this workstation. The XML import is seamless this way as it references the source capture media entirely, meaning that if you need another bar or two of some music beyond what you initially cut in FCP, it's there. Just drag the region longer.

My problems in the past have always been bringing in stuff from other video editors. Thus I have Protools and the DV toolkit, etc. But doing everything on one machine with Final Cut Studio, Shake and Logic Pro has been a real joy and a seamless workflow.

My biggest gripe with SoundTrackPro is the inability to turn off scrolling. ie, when you are zoomed right in to edit out a click or something similar, you can't hit play and listen to a select area with your click in it, without the part you are editing dissappearing right before you! Makes the program virtually useless.
It's a shame, because the program has so much potential in other areas.

My dubbing mixer buddies say that editing dialog in
Logic (arrange page) is not as easy as pro tools.
It's easy to knock things out of sync.

Ha, yes, I know this one. Sometimes when your zoomed in on a dialog region and you have the track selected, it's easy to forget that changes or movements you make affect all the regions in the track. This is virtually impossible to happen in Protools. You just have to be mindful of it.

All the mixing
tools I would have thought would be comparable.

They are. They just have a different approach. But I like both.

I recently completed audio post for 20 short videos using Logic without any major problems. For each, I received an OMF and a low-res Quicktime. Import the OMF. Import the movie. Simple.

The only catch we had to work out is when the FCP editor exports the OMF, they need to make sure crossfades are NOT included (FCP will ask you this prior to export). Including the crossfades causes Logic to crash everytime.
