Q: Easy notice to know which store accepts Apple Pay

I like to try Apply Pay but seems no easy way to know which store accepts it. I asked a few times at different stores, not noticing any Apple Pay signs, and they said they do not use it.  I found an app that shows the stores that accept Apple Pay but just not so convenient to go through several steps to find the store.  Wish Apple will have an update to send out auto Notice on iPhone or Apple Watch once inside or near store(s) that accepts Apple Pay. Like with Starbuck, once you are near a Starbuck store, it sends out a message to iPhone.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2

CVS is a large drug store (apothecary?) chain in the U.S. with three stores within a mile of my house.  All three of those stores have the left-hand symbol on a device that sure looks like an Apple Pay receiver.  In fact, when I bring my phone up to the sign, I get the correct "ding" which is, unfortunately, always followed by a reject sound a second later.  Two clerks at two different stores have told me that no one has been able to use Apple Pay

    Maybe.

That's exactly correct.  As I indicated in my earlier post, even the appropriate "ding" is not evidence!

CVS & Rite-Aid at first would not accept ApplePay as they are part of the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) consortium. (which requires you to give your checking/bank account info so they can take it directly from your account).

Rite-Aid has since started accepting ApplePay. CVS still does not.

The little symbol with the hand means it accepts NFC Mobile payments. ApplePay uses NFC but it’s tweaked a bit and it’s not the same payment system.

The “new Samsung pay”  uses regular NFC Mobile payments.

I figured that there had to be some logic behind it.  Nothing in the computer world is truly random.  That's why PRN's exist - Pseudo-Random Numbers, with emphasis on the pseudo.

The Acme supermarket near me did something weird.  They removed the ApplePay devices from the self-service checkout counters but retained them at the cashier counters and, in those cases, the customer is always asked the "last four digits of your card."  The customer has to be aware that the wording of the question is incorrect and that the correct number to respond with is the "Device Account Number."

Because a thumbprint isn’t secure enough?

As I explained beneath those symbols in that same reply, the following caveat applied:

    Jonathan UK wrote:

.. Some stores may show one of the symbols on their card readers and point of sale terminals, but might not currently be set up to accept Apple Pay and/or other contactless payments. In the US, this presently includes ... CVS.

Apple Pay may still, however, be accepted in some CVS stores.

    This is not necessarily correct.

    For example:

I can confirm today that CVS is accepting Apple Pay.  Went into one to purchase an item and asked the employee if they accept Apple Pay as I saw the reader with the logo on the countertop.  He stated that they do and that it's been working.  Tried it myself and it worked!

Apple has not done a good job letting users know that they can use the iPhone at non-Apple Pay merchants. This has no doubt slowed down adoption. Before I discovered this, Apple Pay was just a novelty to me that I used at Walgreens. Now I love the convenience, speed, and security of using my phone.

I can't find a similar list for Visa but here is a Master Card contactless finder. If a merchant accepts MC they will most likely accept Visa.

Apple has no way to know all of the merchants that accept contactless payments.  While they have worked directly with some merchants to get them to accept Apple Pay, any merchant can contact their credit card processor and have them enable contactless payments as long as they have terminals that support it.

As for finding merchants that accept contact payments, I prefer the Nearby mobile app from MasterCard.

The supermarket has not removed ALL ApplePay terminals.  I don't know what it is but there is something about ApplePay that the merchants simply don't like.

If they do not accept ApplePay (it is a non-Apple pay merchant), you cannot use iPhone there.
