Q: recovery mode does not work

Ok, so I upgraded to El Capitan. Then I went to expand my bootcamp partition. I was able to resize my Mac HD partition which left some un-allocated space. When I logged out to go to Windows to absorb that space, my Windows partition was no longer available. I have read that I need to go to the Recovery Mode to turn off the SIP but I am just hanging at the grey apple. Help!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

You currently have El Capitan. You can install ML, but please upgrade all the way to El C, before we try to modify the internal disk. Please also download and install http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ .

Ok, so step 1... Reinstall Mac OS X

I am sorry for all the questions and complications but... I have Windows 7 Ultimate on my BC and I don't have the disk but I do have the  key.

    1. We need to use an external disk, USB3 or FW800 or Thunderbolt is preferable to slower USB flash drives.

    2. Be very careful and pick the external disk. Please ensure that the external disk is formatted as a GUID Partition disk.

    3. Please post any error messages you see.

    4. Upgrade ML all the way to match the version that you have on the internal disk.

Is there a way for me to use the Backup I made with the CCC even though it will take me back to 10.6.8?

Can you restore that backup to a different external disk and boot from it? if you do not want to do all this, we may need to do this in two steps. Fix Windows temporarily to let you create a backup, and then erase BC/Windows and the extra partition and merge them into a single contiguous block and let you re-install Windows in this larger free space.

The backup I made with CCC is an exact bootable copy of my hard disk and yes its an external disk.

If we want to upgrade this to the latest version on your internal disk, it will modify your CCC backup. This is why I suggested an external disk to restore this backup to, to preserve the original.

Sorry this is taking so long. I don't expect you to stay up with me. I know it's getting late. I am working on getting an external disk for the new reinstall. If you need to go, we can continue when you can. Also, I am not opposed to doing a clean install at this point.

Before we clean install, please ensure you have good backups. Are you willing to clean install OS X and Windows, both, or just Windows?

    What year/model is your Mac?

Ok, so don't get upset with me but I got very frustrated last night after about 1a when I still couldn't get things to work, so I tried just starting from the beginning.. sorta.  Here is where I am at this point.

I am back to my OS X 10.6.8.  I got rid of the Bootcamp partition.  At this point, I want to re-partition my Mac HD and then when I get my bootcamp set up again with Windows and my apps, then I will see about upgrading to El Capitan again.

So.. that's what I am thinking of doing, but now I cant get passed an error in Bootcamp Assistant:  The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

If you haven't given up on me... I could still use your help.

Based on OS X versions and builds included with Mac computers - Apple Support, your MBP seems to be an early 2011 model. 10.6 is considered one of the most stable OS X releases. I still run it on a Mini Server.

What is the version of Windows you want to install?
