Q: Why does applications take up so much storage?

I recently bought a new macbook pro and updated to OS X El Capitan but when I checked my storage a few days later, it said that my apps were taking up almost 75gb. However, if you can see the image here, I have 121gb of storage and 85gb free, meaning I've only used about 35gb. How do I fix this and why is this happening?

If the number doesn't make sense to you based on the applications that you have installed (and it is high relative to the 20GB of applications I have) you might try rebuilding the index using the following instructions: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support
