Q: Bootcamp NTFS Formatting issue with Windows 10

Hello,

Because I think it is an interesting concept, I have recently been trying to install windows 10 on my iMac as I have a product key from a friend and it would be cool to run two operating systems on one computer.  I have looked up tutorials so that I know what to do, and I wanted to use my 8gb flash drive so I used coding to trick bootcamp into thinking I was using a computer with no optical drive.  I have gotten up to the point of the hard drive selection screen on the windows 10 set up.  Here it tells me that I can not proceed because my bootcamp partition is not in the correct format.  I looked up this problem and after doing so formatted my bootcamp partition, but even after that, it would still not allow me to continue stating that my partition was STILL in the wrong format.  I am so close to installing Windows and just a little help to finish.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

                                                                                                                                                   Thanks,

                                                                                                                                                                                      Evan LeConey

Also note that I do not have a partition installed currently, but will reinstall it once I have a suggestion and then will attempt that suggestion

    1. Please do not trick the computer. It will trick you back (as it just did).

    2. What year is your iMac?

    3. Does your iMac have a built-in Optical drive?

    1. I had to considering I do not have a disk to use...... this does not have anything to do with my problem, as the part that involves it was successful and fine

    2. I believe 2011, but the requirements are definitely met for running windows 10

    3. yes, but I do not have a windows disk and my friend used a windows usb as well

An ISO is an image of a disk, which can be burnt to a physical DVD disk - Disk Utility (Yosemite): Burn a disk image to a CD or DVD .

The part you were successful with is creating a USB Installer, but you will not be able to boot, because your specific Mac (2011) does not support USB boot fully.

Also 2011 Macs do not officially support W10 and are not in the list in Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support .

Does your 'friend' have the exact same model Mac? A 2012 Mac supports USB boot, a 2011 does not. Using USB and EFI boot also causes some hardware not work properly, for example Audio.

My friend doesn't have a mac he originally used it on his pc, I'm only using his product key which works fine.

I was able to boot the installer for windows I just can't partition the disk for some reason that I am attempting to trouble shoot

I did see that 2011 macs do not officially support but I've seen tutorials showing users with 2011 iMacs

Please click on the line which says...

"Windows can't be installed on Disk0 Partition 4 (Show details)" and post a screen shot.

If it has a GPT vs MBR error, you are using the incorrect icon (EFI Boot). Was the installer media built using OSX BC Assistant?

PCs have BIOS, Macs do not. They can either support EFI or CSM-BIOS. Comparing PCs with Macs will lead you to many issues. Once Windows is installed, then, a Mac is almost the same as a PC (but not quite).

The "coding trick" (modifying Bootcamp info.plist) is a really bad approach. It creates more problems than it solves.

Is there a problem with burning your W10 ISO to a DVD and using the standard BCA method of using the Optical drive to install Windows? It will save you many hours of work. It takes me 20 minutes to install Windows on a Mac which supports DVD boot. If your Optical drive is broken, replaced, dysfunctional, knowing this helps getting your issues resolved faster.

Now were getting somewhere!  The error that you stated is correct, that is my problem.  I would use the optical drive approach, but I don't believe I have a dvd that I can use.... I can check though.  The installer media was built using bootcamp assistant, I downloaded Microsoft's official iso for windows 10 64 bit.

Oh, and can any dvd be used if it is formatted?  I have some movies that I don't watch....  Or do I need a blank disc?

You need a blank recordable DVD. It is usually a DVD-R SL. Do not use a DVD-RW SL/DL. Your ISO should be less than 4.75 GB (a SL DVD). If it is larger, you have an ISO which is 32-bit/64-bit mixed.

If the ISO has been verified for integrity by using MD5sum/SHA1, then even better.

It turns out I do have blank discs but I'm not sure if they're the correct type, its getting pretty late where I am so I'm going to go, but my iso file is only about 3 gigabytes so that is not a 32/64 bit issue.  I will check tomorrow and post a picture that might help to identify the dvd type, or I could put it into my mac and check the type.... I'm not sure that the official microsoft windows 10 iso is verified by the organizations you mentioned, but it must be secure coming from an official source.   anyway, I'll talk to you tomorrow if you are on. thanks for the help so far and good night!

Hi again, it turns out I have quite a few blank CD's, wondering if those would work for installing Windows 10....  Not sure how much they can hold though.

Never mind.  I tried to burn it, but there wasn't enough storage space.

I don't believe  I have a disk of the type you were talking about, but was wondering if you could provide a link as to where I can buy one?  (assuming they don't cost much money)
