Getting the "Pinwheel" too much!!

Seems like when you try to view something on Facebook and such, I get the "Pinwheel" and then the Mac freezes up and I have to reboot! Very frustrating. What is the fix. Do I have a "Virus" or other things? iMac Mountain Lion. 😕

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Ways to help make a slow Mac faster

17 Reasons Why Your Mac Runs Slower Than it Should

6 Easy Tips to Speed Up OS X Yosemite on Your Mac

Avoid using any third-party software that claims to clean up your computer. Usually this software does more bad than good. Furthermore, you don't need it. Note that all computers will become slower over time even under normal use. Experienced users typically erase the hard drive and do a clean install from scratch at least once a year or whenever installing a major OS upgrade. Of course doing so also means you must maintain regular and multiple backups.

Add more RAM or cut back on the number of concurrently running applications and utilities. Remove unnecessary software such as anti-malware and software that promises to clean your Mac. Check for runaway processes: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan acti… Also see:

Pre-Mavericks

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Mavericks and later

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the %CPU column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of %CPU, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

The Ultimate Fix

Backup everything, erase the drive, reinstall OS X, and restore your data from the backup. Reinstall third-party software from original media/scratch.

Click on the Apple > About this Mac > either click on Storage and then Memory and take a screenshot of each, or click on System report and copy information by clicking on the Memory entry on left. As for hard drive space, highlight your hard drive (Macintosh HD) and hit the Command + I keys; either post a screenshot of the resulting window or simply post the capacity and available numbers here.

Well, you need to get rid of this stuff: Advanced Mac Cleaner, all Kaspersky stuff, and all the F-Secure AV stuff (including the safe anywhere preference pane). Check the developer's site for uninstall instructions. These types of software usually are what slow down the OS to a crawl.

Also check your Startup item - Tuxera; make sure you have the latest (and compatible) version if you need it.

Downloaded the Etrecheck and ran the system. Showed a bunch of Malware and then suggested using Malwarebytes program to rid the Malware. I have noticed an improvement in the "Speed" on which programs/sites open, once this was accomplished. At the moment, I can say that there is a "Big" improvement. "babowa" has added suggestions as well. Will work on those suggestions as well. Thanks to babowa and you as well. 🙂

Jan 23, 2016 6:48 PM in response to nuguy2

I would like to "Echo" babowa in that we have repeatedly had people post performance issues after upgrading OS X and blame the new OS X, except on investigation it turns out it is all the 3rd party stuff that has been added to looks for non-existent viruses, cleaning software, and software that claims it will improve performance. All of which slows the system down, sometimes deletes things it shouldn't and on occasion causes the system to panic.

So I strongly suggest you remove the items babowa has pointed out.

With respect to anti-virus, please read the following, which points out why OS X protects itself

Jan 24, 2016 9:55 AM in response to nuguy2

nuguy2, Instead of taking pictures of your screen, you can take screen shots with the Mac:

Mac OS X Screen Shots:

Screen Shot to a Desktop file:

Command-Shift-4 - Drag to select copy region

Command-Shift-4-Space - Capture Window under cursor, then Click

Command-Shift-3 - Capture entire screen

If you want to capture a menu or pop-up, then use

Command-Shift-4-Space

NOTE: Preview can be used to annotate a Screen Shot with Circles, Arrows,

and Text to describe interesting points in the Screen Shot.

Screen Shot to Clipboard:

Command-Control-Shift-4 - Drag to select copy region

Command-Control-Shift-4-Space - Capture Window under cursor, then Click

Command-Control-Shift-3 - Capture entire screen

Now paste the clipboard into whatever a document that accepts graphics such as Mail, TextEdit, Preview, etc...

If you want a menu or pop-up captured in the Clipboard, then use

Command-Control-Shift-4-Space
