Jan 23, 2016 4:25 PM in response to Gary Scotlandby linda san mateo,I tried this, but did not work. Same results. It is basically the same thing I tried last time except I did use advanced options as suggested. Even without advanced options, pptx is added as suffix when powerpoint is selected.
A few months ago, this same process of saving a keynote file in powerpoint format worked fine. On my keynote presentation, I clicked under File, export to power point and it saved it in a powerpoint format. This time, the new powerpoint file only shows the first slide, the remaining slides are empty. A message appears on each slide "PowerPoint cannot read CNY2016.pptx."
Thanks for your help.

Jan 24, 2016 6:02 AM in response to linda san mateoby Gary Scotland,Two thoughts:
do you have an older version of Keynote installed as well as the latest version, have used that instead?
reset Keynote by deleting Keynote from the applications folder, empty the trash and re-install from Mac App Store

Jan 24, 2016 10:06 AM in response to Gary Scotlandby linda san mateo,Gary: With this keynote presentation that I have had problems converting to power point, it was originally created about 1 year ago. For this years presentation, I made some changes in a few slides to update. So possibly the presentation is built on an older keynote app. Although I usually keep my computer current on updates. Looked at the apps update, and it doesn't say my Keynote has a new software update due.
If I delete and trash my current Keynote app, and reinstall would that action render any previously created keynote presentations in my computer unreadable? I would hate to lose what I have finished. Want to know before, I trash it and re-install.
Thanks
PS. Just looked again and see that I have not updated to OSX El Capitan. Would this make a difference with my keynote problem? I am a bit hesitant reading the reviews and concerned about changes in iphoto, since I have that organized in albums.

Jan 24, 2016 10:36 AM in response to linda san mateoby Gary Scotland,The current version of Keynote is 6.6.1 issued in November 2015, files created by the previous version should open without issue.
Deleting then re-installing the Keynote application will not remove any presentations, only the application will be deleted.
However, always have a current backup of all your user work files.
I have not updated to El Capitan as after testing, some of the Applications (Keynote included) have issues when running in the latest Mac OS
I suggest performing this reset and repair procedure:
- to uninstall Keynote, you must use an application removal tool for this procedure to work
- Appcleaner is free and works well for this procedure, it can be download from here: Appcleaner
- perform all the steps in the order listed
1 uninstall Keynote
2 empty the trash
3 shut Down the Mac (Apple menu > Shut Down)
4 wait 10 seconds, then press the power button
5 immediately after you hear the start up tone, hold down the Shift key
6 release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple screen,
start up will take a few minutes longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair
7 after the repair and the Mac is fully booted, restart the Mac normally, (Apple > Restart)
8 install Keynote from the Mac App Store

Jan 24, 2016 5:01 PM in response to Gary Scotlandby linda san mateo,Thanks for your suggestions.
I was ready to install the app cleaner when I got a warning from Sophos Anti-virus software which is installed on my laptop. It put the files for MacUpdate Installer and app cleaner in the quarantine box and blocked access because it senses the files are infected, has malware, or are a threat. So I'm confused if it is safe to install. Sophos Anti-Virus software was highly recommended by a friend who used to manage our tech systems at work.
Should I just go to the genius bar at the apple store? Not too far from me.

Jan 25, 2016 5:36 AM in response to linda san mateoby Gary Scotland,Using Appcleaner downloaded from the link I included is completely safe.
Sophos Anti-Virus software was highly recommended by a friend who used to manage our tech systems at work.
Your friend is clueless regarding the use of Mac security software.
Sophos antivirus, as all antivirus and so called security cleaning software is of no use on a Mac, it is well known for displaying false positives for hundreds of harmless Apple system files.
No one requires 3rd party antivirus or security tools for the Mac.
The only people who want users to install this software are those who market or sell it.
Mac OS X performs all the security functions you will ever need in using the Mac.

Jan 26, 2016 4:48 PM in response to Gary Scotlandby linda san mateo,I got to step 8 on your list and am ready to download new keynote. However, now the app store wants to charge me $19.99 for the Keynote app.
I took the apple one to one classes last year. When I asked for help on Keynote in class I had the same problem. The app was not on my laptop. The teacher was puzzled because it was to be included with my laptop (purchased fall 2014). The app store said there was a charge for the app. He figured out some way for me to download the app free, but I forgot how he did it. Any ideas how to get the keynote app back for free? Or do I need to go to store. Thanks.

Jan 27, 2016 3:19 AM in response to linda san mateoby Gary Scotland,Keynote version 6 series is free for life under the following conditions:
- sign in to the Mac App Store using the Apple ID that you used to install Keynote previously
- users must have purchased a new unused Mac or (a refurbished Mac direct from Apple)
- installed Keynote during the first 12 months of ownership of the Mac
if there are any issues with the above conditions and you have proof of ownership and an invoice showing Keynote was included with the purchase, phone Apple Support (they are always very helpful) using the relevant phone number from this web page:

Jan 27, 2016 10:29 PM in response to Gary Scotlandby linda san mateo,Was able to download new keynote app with your directions. Tried to export keynote to PowerPoint and still got same results as before-- blank slides except for the first one. Frustrating. Think I will just start in PowerPoint and forget keynote. Planned to show the presentation at the library which usually can only run PowerPoint. Thanks for your help.

Feb 27, 2016 9:19 AM in response to linda san mateoby vancity29,I have the same problem with the latest version of Keynote corrupting my files when I export them as .pptx files. I'm a lecturer and every semester I update my lectures and then export to PowerPoint so that I can upload them for my students. In the middle of last semester (following the upgrade of Keynote to 6.6.1), my students began to complain the pptx files were corrupted...it was annoying to get 60 emails about this so I had to take action.
What I've done is to have two versions of Keynote on my laptop (MB Air, Mid 2012 running El Capitan). I have the latest 6.6.1 and 6.5.3, the previous version.
What I do is the following:
1. Export as a pptx in 6.6.1
2. Open the file in 6.5.3 (which opens as a keynote) and then re-export as a pptx
When I do this two step process, the pptx file opens just fine (at least my students don't complain anymore so I suspect everything is ok).
I got the previous version of Keynote (6.5.3) by going into Time Machine and installing it from the Applications folder.
This whole thing is a PITA, but it's the only way I can think of to get pptx files that aren't corrupted.
