Q: The volume up (+) button on my iPhone 5 blasts full volume when pressed

So, my iPhone 5 has never really had issues until recently when the volume up button started blasting full volume when pressed (as if the button is stuck down and as a result goes to full volume). When this happens, the is no longer responsive when pressed and the only way to fix it temporary is by pressing down on the button extremely hard and the button returns to working like normal for a little bit. But, usually a few hours later, if I press it, it will do it again. It is as if there is something sticky or caught when I press it down, causing the button to blast full volume when pressed down a certain way.

Just wanted to post if by the off chance someone else has experienced this issue and if there are any tips to alleviate this issue completely.

Thanks

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), iTunes 10.7

    Hi steellogic,

Are you able to control the volume on your iPhone with the Control Center?

Use Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

    Control Center on iPhone:

If the issue persists with the volume buttons, try the steps below:

If the volume buttons, Ring/Silent switch, or Side Switch aren't working

If the volume buttons, Ring/Silent switch, or Side Switch aren't working

On an iPhone, the volume buttons and Ring/Silent switch are on the left side of the device. The buttons on other iPhone models are similar. On an iPad, the volume buttons and Side Switch are on the right side of the device.

If any of these buttons or switches aren't working, follow these steps. After each step, see if you still need help:

    1. Unlock your device. Some buttons don't work from the Lock screen.
    2. Check for debris or dirt around the button or switch and clean it with a soft cloth.
    3. Remove all protective films and cases that might interfere with the button or switch.

If the button or switch still isn't working, if it works intermittently, or if it's damaged, contact Apple Support to set up service.

    Take care,

    Thanks for the reply.

After various troubleshooting strategies, what seems to have fixed the issue is believe it or not, the iPhone case I was using. When I looked at the case closely, I noticed the button seem to be slightly stuck down. Since changing cases, issue appears to be resolved.

    Hi steellogic,

Removing the iPhone case and testing is one of the troubleshooting steps in the article above.  Thanks for confirming that this worked for you.
