Q: Can't add email addresses for iMessage from iPhone

I have an iPhone 4s on  9.2.1, an iPad mini on 9.2 (wifi only) and a MacBook Pro using El Capitan.  Apple ID site shows that I have 3 verified emails and these show OK on the iPad Mini, and the MacBook  for iMessage, but the iPhone says Use Your Apple ID for iMessage rather than displaying my Apple ID and just lists my phone number.

If i try to explicitly add something to the iPhone - eg one of the email addresses - I get told that I need to sign in with my Apple ID to activate Messages Then it just displays my account information - nothing ever changes in the iPhone message settings.

I have similar problems with FaceTime on the iPhone and the iPad but the Mac shows all emails and the phone number of the iPhone 4s.

I tried disabling iMessage and FaceTime and removing all email addresses from Apple ID and starting again - but the same problem.

Thank you

iPhone 4S, iOS 9.2.1

    Hi possiexx,

Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

It seems like your iPhone 4s isn't being activated for use with iMessage and both of your iOS devices aren't activated for use with FaceTime.

For this situation, I recommend going through all of the steps in this article on both of your devices: If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime.

    All the best.

    Hi jeremy_v

Thank you for your suggestion. I should have said that iMessage was working fine on the iPhone. I have never seen error messages with activate in them.

I am wondering if I don't understand what should be happening.  In summary I am now at the stage where the problems are just with iPhone with iMessage and iPad with FaceTime!

    iPhone -

I did inadvertently have the slider off for FaceTime from all my previous attempts to fix the problem.

for FaceTime it now looks like I would expect - Apple id in the top and then the phone number and 3 email addresses (including the Apple ID)

for iMessage - just my phone number that does work for iMessage (and did before - I was not clear in my original post). Should it automatically pick up the 3 other email addresses?

If I say add an email to iMessage - it asks me to sign in with my Apple ID - then it says Verify an email address so I click on Verify - but what email is it verifying?  It goes to the Apple ID site and wants me to sign in again to manage my Apple account - but the emails that are listed there under Account are the ones I want to use for iMessage so what do I need to do? It shows my phone number and my Apple ID - and the 2 other email addresses as expected.

iPad - the iMessage info is what I would expect - phone number and 3 email addresses all with check marks against them.

However on FaceTime I see no slider to enable FaceTime - like I do on the iPhone - if I take the prompt to sign in with my Apple ID it says Verifying on the top and then says a verified email address is required - same as the issue I have with iMessage on the iPhone! Why doesn't it pick up the emails already on my Account?

MacBook - all fine - shows phone number and the 3 email addresses on both iMessage and FaceTime

If I sign on to Apple it says I am reachable at

    my phone number

    email 1 (my apple id)

    email 2

    email 3

Where to from here - very frustrating.
