Q: Phone shuts down when it's cold outside

I live in Norway, and it usually gets as cold as -19°C/-2°F. When I'm outside, my phone shuts down and claims there's no more battery, when it was like 70% before it shut off. This is very annoying, and it since iPhone is supposed to be such a great phone, a little cold shouldn't be a problem.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2.1

    Hello AmalieSeierstad,

The resource below explains the acceptable operating temperatures for the iPhone.  Click on the link for complete details.

Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range may temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when the device is brought back to higher ambient temperatures.

    Take care,

That's well below the operating range for the phone.

Which is why most outdoor clothing for cold weather has inside pockets to keep temperature-sensitive devices.

Funny you should mention that.  I have a long jacket with a battery for warmth.  There is a switch setting to keep a phone pocket (relatively) warm.
