Q: I updated to Windows 10. Tried to update iTunes and get a message about a problem with Windows Installer.
I recently updated my computer to Windows 10. I attempted to update iTunes. About three-quarters of the was through the update I get a message about a problem with Windows Installer. I literally spent 3 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support ( more than one tech worked on the problem) yesterday. They took control of my computer inspecting all sorts of file and trying new settings. They even did a reinstall of Windows 10 the purchased version of Windows 10. The free download version was a disaster. After all the work, they couldn't find anything wrong with the Windows installation. Didn't fix the problem with updating iTunes. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I did all the program repair option on the Windows Control Panel already. Obviously, that didn't work either.

Try repairing Apple Software Update from the Programs and Features control panel, then reinstall iTunes.
If that didn't work try using the Microsoft install and uninstall utility mentioned in note 1 below the second box referred to below.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.
Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
You could also try using the steps in Install missing components to install those components that will install.
