iPhoto events in Photos, don't understand.

Ever since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite (and now ElCapitan) my Photos library contains my old iPhoto events. Here are my questions:

1) When I choose "All Photos" it shows I have 11,000 photos but I should have close to 30,000. Is that because all the photos in "iPhoto Events" are not counted in "All Photos"?

2) "iPhoto Events" contains 393 events, but many of them are grayed out? Where did those photos go and how can I retrieve them?

2) I still have the iPhoto app. Can I trash the app or will that somehow delete all my iPhotos currently on the Photos app? Seems crazy I still have an old app that was replaced with Photos.

3) How can I merge all my photos so that I have one single library and no longer have anything labelled iPhoto?

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder.

User uploaded file

To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear. It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue. Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

1 - wrong - all Photos is all photos in your library - the iPhotos events folder contains albums matching the event you have in iPhoto - albums are not a place or a duplicate - they are just a different was of viewing the photos in your library (all Photos) for organizational purposes - a photo can be in 1000 albums and it still exists only once in the library

2 - I have no idea - please provice more information

3 - you should not trash the iPhoto App as you might want or need it and it can be extremely difficult to get back and it takes very little space - less that 2 GB

4 - when you migrated your iPhoto library all the photos were migrated - there is nothing to merge (and there is no way to merge)

What OS do you have? What version of Phtoos and of iPhoto? How many photos are in the iPhoto library and in the Photos library?

OK I'll try again. Maybe I'm saying this in a confusing way, please be patient with me.

On my iMac I have 30,000 photos. I have iCloud Photo enabled. But after I updated my MacBook to Yosemite (which replaced iPhoto with Photos), I noticed one day that the MacBook All Photos says 10,000 photos (Because it's MacBook Air I only kept a few photos on it before I subscribed to iCloud Photo). Could that be because my iMac hasn't been kept on long enough to upload all the photos to iCloud?

Next: My computers now show that I have TWO iPhoto Events folders. One has about 25 events, which are all grayed out. That means when you click on the folder you see a bunch of gray squares which have the titles of the events under them but are empty. The other iPhoto Events folder has 395 events, most of which are complete but a number of them are empty gray squares too. I notice when Photos is opening that there is at first one gear wheel circling around and then just before it opens there are two gear wheels.

I have not yet opened the iPhoto app which is still on my iMac and MacBook, just made me nervous not knowing what to expect if I do.

So can you help me understand what has happened?

Thanks for your patience.
