Q: why won't my iphone 6s pair with my macbook pro purchased in 2015?

I am unable to pair my iPhone 6s running 9.2 with my MacBook Pro purchased in 6/2015 running El Capitan 10.11.2.  Things go something like this "Connection Unsuccessful, XXXXX MacBook Pro not supported, Forget Device".

What's really odd is that a few months ago, without any effort on my part, my iPhone started ringing on my MBP and I could answer it.  Texts were also appearing on my MBP.  It stopped just as suddenly as it started.  It was a real convenience to be able to answer calls on the MBP and see texts there so I'd love to pair these devices.

But how?

TIA with much appreciation to anyone who can help,

Suzanne

It is not necessary to pair an iPhone and MacBook. There are things to do with it, but it just requires you to have Bluetooth turned on, not to pair. Bluetooth: Why can't I pair my iPhone or iPad with another iOS device or with my computer?

The ability to handle calls and texts is not dependent on pairing.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.  Bluetooth is on on both devices.

But how do I get calls and texts to my iPhone to come to my MBP?  It happened for a while and just as suddenly stopped happening even though I didn't do anything to start or stop them.

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support

Switch between your devices using Handoff

By the way - Chris is right - my devices are all paired and capable of receiving and sending texts and calls - and bluetooth is not on

Thank you.  It seems I have some learning to do about Continuity and Handoff.

But do I understand correctly that I just need to have Bluetooth on for both devices and I will be able to get calls/texts from my iPhone on my MBP?  Bluetooth is on for both my MBP and iPhone and calls are not coming to the Mac.

I'm not familiar with getting calls on the Mac, since I'm not a Mac user, however you should get the balance of the information from the other poster. I believe the support document explaining Continuity and Handoff should provide you with the instructions for handling your Mac.

    Thank you.

Also, when I open Bluetooth preferences on the Mac, it is not seeing the phone which is just a few feet away.  Bluetooth is definitely on on the phone.

    Suzanne,

It has nothing to do with Bluetooth - the main thing is proximity and being on the same WiFi network

I just checked my own Mac - it sees the Phone but is not connected -

So that is where your answer may lie - for some reason your iPhone is not allowing your Mac to see it and connect to it

The articles I enclosed may help you

Oh - just remembered - on the iPhone Settings - Phone - Calls on other devices - See if that is toggled to ON

    Thank you!

I went to Settings > Phone and there isn't an option for calls on other devices.

    This is 9.2.1

If you are not seeing Calls On Other Devices, then they are not signed in with the same ID. That would be the only thing blocking that I am aware of. Everything that is signed into the same iCloud ID would be listed there. All of my iOS devices are listed there, but I don't have a Mac, so I cannot talk about that.

This is my device on iOS 9.2.1.

I think I am signed in to iCloud on both devices.  I know I am on the Mac and am pretty sure I am on the iPhone and it's with the same login for both but I'm not seeing what you are in phone settings.  All I have under calls are 'respond with text', 'blocked', and 'tty'.

When I look under Apple ID > Devices, it is seeing both the phone and laptop as signed in to iCloud.

On the MBP, on the iCloud settings page under devices it says both the phone and laptop are signed in and running the needed software.

You are very patient and kind to keep helping me.

    Thanks, I needed that!

Check to see if any of the information here in this support document helps, while I look for something else. Because I don't use a Mac, I've not had to get involved in this part of it. Best I can do is with my other iOS devices. Get help using Continuity with your iOS device or your Mac - Apple Support

<EDIT>  Okay, let's see if this is the one that does it!! OS X El Capitan: Use your Mac to make and receive phone calls

If you are not seeing the Call Forwarding and Call Waiting options in addition to the Calls on other Devices option - it almost makes me wonder if everything is alright with your phone account

    Two options here:

    1. Reboot the phone - there is no data loss

Press and hold the off/on and home buttons till you see the  and then allow normal boot up

See if that resolves the issues

    2. If not then - try to remove the SIM card - please do this over a flat dry surface - gently blow some air at the tray and the card and put it back in to the phone

Remove or switch the SIM card in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

The only other option would be a reinstall wherein you back up the phone to iTunes and then restore it to factory condition using the iTunes restore function

Unless Chris has other thoughts .....

Not seeing the other settings may mean the carrier does not support that, and they could be eliminated by the carrier file. Not knowing her location, it is hard to say, and the Wi-Fi calling is also a carrier specific setting. I'm just at a loss on any other thoughts with the computer since I'm not familiar with Mac, I'm a Windows user, so I cannot even do what she is asking.

    ...

The Call Forwarding and Call Waiting options in Settings > Phone depend on which cellular provider is being used. Those options do not appear if Verizon is the provider for example.
