Q: why won't my iphone 6s pair with my macbook pro purchased in 2015?

I am unable to pair my iPhone 6s running 9.2 with my MacBook Pro purchased in 6/2015 running El Capitan 10.11.2.  Things go something like this "Connection Unsuccessful, XXXXX MacBook Pro not supported, Forget Device".

What's really odd is that a few months ago, without any effort on my part, my iPhone started ringing on my MBP and I could answer it.  Texts were also appearing on my MBP.  It stopped just as suddenly as it started.  It was a real convenience to be able to answer calls on the MBP and see texts there so I'd love to pair these devices.

But how?

TIA with much appreciation to anyone who can help,

Suzanne

I think the step by step instructions in the article you enclosed should do it

I do use a Mac but my Handoff has worked through the Yosemite to El Capitan update so not sure either

(That is the "problem" with Apple , it just works - so when there is a problem per se it does take some digging and you are far more experienced at this than I am)

What throws me off completely is that OP had the feature and then lost it - not sure if they changed carriers

The restore is/was a last ditch option

I can tell you - as a Mac person - it is a real convenience and I can completely understand why OP would want the feature back

My carrier is Verizon.  It was AT&T until I bought the 6s and I don't know for certain but am pretty sure I had this feature briefly after getting the new phone because I remember thinking it was an awesome feature of the new phone.

Is this function not available at all with Verizon?  Or is there just a different way to set it up?

PS Thank you so much to everyone who is taking time from their weekend to help me.

The "Calls on Other Devices" option should appear in Settings > Phone regardless of your carrier (and does appear on my Verizon phone). It was the "Call Forwarding" and "Call Waiting" options as stated in my earlier post that will not appear on that screen if your carrier is Verizon.

Thank you, that gives me hope.

I will keep trying the things suggested here.

Thank you all again for your help and patience.  You are very much appreciated.  I will post when I get things figured out.  I still have not tried everything posted here.

Oh, I am in Massachusetts (Cape Cod at this time) if that makes a difference.  (Someone mentioned not knowing where I am located, location being a possible factor.)

Seriously, though, sincere thank you to everyone.

I wonder if this is relevant information about the cause of this problem?

Under iCloud preferences > Account Details > Devices, it says that neither my MBP nor 6s can receive Apple ID verification codes.  I can see where maybe my MBP couldn't get them, but my 6s?

OK, so I went through all the things that all you incredibly kind and patient people posted and I don't know exactly which thing I did that set things straight, but calls to my iPhone are now also coming to my MBP.  Victory!

I can't know for sure, but I think it was logging into FaceTime on both the phone and the MBP.  Since I don't use FT, I hadn't done that but when I re-read the instructions, it says to do that so you can get phone calls on multiple devices.  I had originally thought they meant just FT calls but maybe not?

    Anyway, thank you to all!

Do you have "Calls on other devices" appear in your settings?

Yes!  But not most of the other things that are on your phone: no Wi-Fi Calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, or Show My Caller ID.  Just Respond With Text, Blocked and TTY.

That is 100% normal for the Settings > Phone > Calls section on a phone where Verizon is the cellular provider.
