I bought something off the refurbished apple site and I am now wanting to return it. Is it possible to return the item to a nearby apple retailer or must I ship it?

Take a look at this Apple info:

It appears that you are able to return it to a store as long as you purchased the item directly from Apple. Also note that the return period is 14 days.

Yes - that is mostly what I buy; it was a refurb iMac that had so many problems that it was declared DOA. And they let me return it when the replacement was ready to b picked up so I had time to back up my stuff and wipe the iMac.
