Jan 23, 2016 2:04 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,What were you doing when this started? What troubleshooting have you tried? Try a force reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The iPhone should reboot. See what happens then.

Jan 23, 2016 2:09 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by Hayden Olmstead,I've tried that multiple times and it seems to not work, the apple logo comes on for exactly 10 seconds then goes to black screen for 4 seconds and then repeats.

Jan 23, 2016 2:18 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,Have you been able to power the device off? You will probably need to force your device into Recovery Mode. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Jan 23, 2016 2:44 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,I'll ask again, what were you trying to do when this occurred? If you cannot force the device to shut down, then you may have to wait until the battery dies so you can try to force it into recovery mode if you cannot force it now.

Jan 23, 2016 2:54 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by Hayden Olmstead,i wasn't trying to do anything when this occurred, went skiing with it one day and it was fine the whole day then the next morning it crashed every once and a while and 5 days later (today) its crashing constantly and sometimes staying at a black screen.

Jan 23, 2016 3:00 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,If it is staying at a black screen, do you feel it is on or off? If it seems to be off, then try to force it into recovery mode as provided in the support document that I linked.

Jan 23, 2016 3:15 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby Hayden Olmstead,i tried what you said and it was working t first then an alert popped up saying "the iPhone could not be updated. an unknown error occurred (9)"

Jan 23, 2016 3:19 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,Error 9 is generally a security software issue, however with a Mac that should not be an issue. Follow the steps in this support document to deal with error codes. Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support
This one is specific about error 9, and I believe it is newer. If you see error 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your iOS device - Apple Support

Jan 23, 2016 4:11 PM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby ChrisJ4203,Well, if you identify the errors, someone might be able to help. However, that screen you see is what happens when you are updating, and you should also see a bar in iTunes moving as well. It can take a while, especially since it sounds as if you have some issues with the device. The error statement may help understand more as well.

Jan 24, 2016 2:58 AM in response to Hayden Olmsteadby bathsaltgoddess,My phone has been doing this as well, but I figured out that as long as I don't lock the phone it will stay on...so I held down the home/lock buttons & eventually got it to reboot/turn on then unlock it immediately, went to the general settings & changed the auto-lock to "never" that way I could at least keep it on to try to figure out what's wrong with it & why it keeps crashing. I just updated it to the newest IOS but whenever I "lock" the phone, it'll turn off & won't turn back NOR charge until I've held the home/lock buttons down for however many seconds...this is becoming quite frustrating but as soon as it's on, the phone acts completely normal...
