Unwanted Keyboard Latency

I'm using Logic Pro X on a Mac Mini. Seems to work fine except with my input device.

I'm attempting to use an Akai Advance 61 keyboard.

The Problem:

I'm experiencing an annoying delay (latency) between keypress

and actual sound output. I've tried adjusting the latency options to no avail.

It is nearly impossible to record with this problem!

Then... You may well need to contact Akai Support to resolve this...

Also if you haven't done so already or if it didn't come from the factory pre-updated... Make sure you updated your Advance to the latest v1.19 firmware via the newest v1.0.7 update software updated for the Mac...

Ok.. let's see if we can discount Logic from the cause...

1) If you have another DAW or even Garageband, test in there....and see if you get the same latency...

if no latency... or you cant test with another DAW... then...

2) Try deleting Logic's preferences...

You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. Quit Logic Pro X
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this.
  6. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  7. Restart the computer.

Note: If you cannot find any of the files listed above, you didn’t follow the instruction correctly! 🙂

Following your instructions explicitly, the list of files jumps from

com.apple.keyboardtype.plist

to

com.apple.loginwindow.plist

to

com.apple.MCX.plist

and onward. There is no "com.apple.logic10.plist" in the Library Preferences folder.

Keep in mind, I have not been able to do any serious work on Logic since I purchased it because:

first, I had to select a compatible keyboard and

second, this ongoing process has not allowed me to get into the recording aspects of Logic.

When you first run Logic and subsequently if you launch LPX after deleting the two plist prefs... they are always and automatically created so Im guessing that somehow you didn't follow the directions exactly.. and were looking in the System Library, not the User Library....

From the plists you mentioned.. The MCX one is only found in the System Library and not the User Library..... which again indicates you erred in following the instructions exactly.

The User Library list should look something like this...

User uploaded file

Whereas the System Library one... will look something like this...

User uploaded file

With those three plists you mentions in that exact same order....

To double check....

After you entered the path into the Go>Go to Server menu item.... Make sure you also copied or used the Tilde (~) symbol before the path to indicate its the User Library..... and not the System Library....

If you are absolutely sure.. you have followed the directions exactly as written... Right click/Control Left click on one of the plists you can see... select Get Info from the dialog box that appears.. and take a screenshot of that info.. to post up here via the camera icon in the reply window..

As it's happening with different DAWs again this then seems to indicate an issue with either the Advance itself.. or its entry in OS X's Midi/Audio setup and you should contact Akai support, letting them know its happening with different DAWs.... as that's an important factor...

Try the plist trick too... but I suspect because its happening in GB then its the setup of the Advance itself, thats at the root of the problem... or another possibility is that something else you have installed ..... is causing this like an audio router such as soundflower.....

To check for this.. please download and run etrecheck....

and post up its report here....

OK...

I ran out of replies on reply thread so I moved to replying on the main thread.

I used the Tilde as advised and found and removed the appropriate file.

I'm still having the latency problem. The Garageband test also gave me the same problems.

Since, for all appearances, Garageband is just a majorly dumbed down version of Logic, is that

test really that valid?
