Apple TV 4 Remote Control Smashed

I got an Apple TV 4 for Christmas. I love Apple products and I have generally found service and replacement costs reasonable. However can someone pls explain 3 things for me:

  1. The remote control is made from glass and other breakable substances. Why would any company on the planet make a remote control so fragile. Removes are supposed to be hardy devices that can stand up to begin dropped many times;
  2. The entire unit costs $270 and a replacement unit cost $130. I can't understand that at all, that seems to be a ridiculous amount for a remote control; and
  3. After phoning apple to ask if the broken glass section could be replaced I was told no. So, unlike an iPhone or iPad where there is no reasonable way to fix this gold plated remote. A cynical person would call this revenue raising because sure as the sun comes up every day 90% of the remotes sold will brake. That is just the nature of the way that they are used.

If anyone has any insight into this I would be most grateful. But, until then I suggest that people save their hard earned money and buy a reliable products with reasonable maintenance or repair alternatives.

Finally, just in case you feel the need to ring Apple, the advice I got from the Apple consultant was that the 2nd and 3rd gen remotes work with the gen 4 Apple TV. I know we should have done some more research prior to buying this product so I have to take a lot of blame for asking Santa to buy one for me. Still, its a new experience for me. I have never before wished that I hadn't brought (or received in this case) an Apple product.
